.Hi everyone, .

.I took my DAT on August 9, 2012. My scores are: .

.Biology: 20 (91.8%).
.General chemistry: 30 (100.0%).
.Organic chemistry: 24 (97.9%).
.PAT: 22 (93.8%).
.RC: 23 (96.1%).
.QR: 26 (99.8%).
.TS: 23 (99.3%).
.AA: 25 (100.0%) .

.Biology.
.I felt the biology section was on the hard side compared to most bio sections that I had on the practice tests. I studied biology more than o-chem and g-chem, but this ended up being my lowest score. I remember there were a few random/ tricky questions. I marked about 10 questions and there were 5 questions that I was really unsure about. I think I ended up getting 6 wrong on this section. .

.General Chemistry.
.The general chemistry section was pretty easy. The computational questions were fairly straightforward. Altogether, there were maybe 2 tricky questions. I was really unsure about one question, but I was able to narrow this question down to 3 choices and pretty much guessed. Overall, I felt that my practice materials were good preparation..

.Organic Chemistry.
.The o-chem section was pretty straightforward. I had about 2-3 tricky questions. I think I got one queshad one question on IR and C13 NMR that I guessed on and probably got wrong. The other question I definitely got wrong was an annoying question asking for the name of a fairly obscure reaction that was never asked about in any of my practice materials. Overall, I felt that my practice materials were good preparation..

.I felt that I went through the science section a more slowly and cautiously than I did for most of my practice exams, but I still had about 20 minutes to check over all the questions on the science section. .

.Perceptual Ability Section.
.The PAT section was average in difficulty compared to my practice materials. I had about 5 minutes left to check over my marked questions. I did two PAT tests from CRACKDAT the days leading up to the exam and got a 22 on both of these practice tests. I ended up getting the same exact score so I think CRACKDAT is a good indicator for this section. .

.Reading Comprehension.
.The reading comprehension section was average in difficulty compared to my practice materials. I've definitely had much more difficult reading passages from Achiever (by far the hardest!) and QVault (some were hard because they were longer >20 paragraphs) where I didn't even finish on time. However, I think my RC might have been harder than some other ADA test since my percentile (96.1%) was higher than others with a 23 on this section (most I've seen have 89ish% with a 23). My passages were on neuroscience, the effect of exercise on mental health, and the relationship between genes and cancer. My strategy was to read all the questions first. I wrote down keywords for each question. This took me about 3.5-4 minutes. I read the passage in about 6 minutes. While I was reading, I jotted down the paragraph number corresponding to keywords from question stems. Although this method was a bit risky since you losing quite a bit of time upfront, I felt that I was able to find the answers fairly quickly after reading the entire passage. I ended up finishing with about a minute. I didn't have any time to check my answers, but I only marked about 7 questions and was confident about getting a 21 or higher. .

.Quantitative Reasoning.

.I was a little tired by the time I got to the QR section. I usually look forward to QR since it is my strongest section and I usually finish with about 10-15 minutes on my practice tests. However, I ended up taking too much time in the beginning because my mind was a bit lethargic in the beginning. I had to pick up the pace later on since I was on question 30 with 10 minutes left. I remember feeling panicky since I felt that I was running out of time. I had 6-7 questions that I marked with 3 minutes left to go. I was able to figure out most questions before time finished. I ended up getting one question wrong that was fairly simple. I was unsure about how to do the other question I got wrong. Overall, I felt this section was slightly harder than average, but I definitely had harder QR sections on Achiever. .

.I studied at the beginning of June till my test date in August. For the first month, I just reviewed concepts and did some PAT test from CRACK DAT. In the second month, I did a practice test almost every other day. I used Kaplan's blue book, Barron's DAT, DAT destroyer, math destroyer, DAT achiever (7 test version), DAT Topscore, Crackdat PAT (10 test version), DATQVAULT, ADA materials (2007 free test and 2009 test), and Cliff's Biology. I felt that all the materials that I used were quite helpful. In particular, I would recommend MATH DESTROYER, DAT destroyer for o-chem, DAT Topscore, DATQVAULT, and ADA materials. DAT Achiever was good to get a feel for the worst, but was about 2 levels harder than the real thing. .

.At the end of the day, I was more than happy with my scores. I was shooting for a 22+. I only scored a 25 or higher on 2 practice exams and most of my scores were around the 21-22 range. I believe the ingredients to achieving a 25+ are good preparation and a little bit of luck (if I had to take the DAT again, I think I could get a 22+, but I'm not sure I good get a 25+ again). .

.My scores from DAT Topscore were:.
.Bio/GC/OC/PAT/RC/QR/TS/AA/ Test
22/23/20/20/22/24/22/22/ test 1.
.22/19/21/22/23/26/21/22/ test 2.
.21/25/20/21/23/26/22/23/ test 3
..
My scores from DAT Achiever were:.

.19/17/17/18/17/22/18/18/ test 2.
.19/17/17/18/17/22/18/18/ test 3.
.17/17/18/17/17/19/17/18/ test 4.
.15/15/15/18/16/20/15/16/ test 5.
.17/20/20/17/22/16/19/19/ test 6.
.19/17/18/18/18/19/18/18/ test 7.

.QR: 30, 27, 30, 23, 30, 30, 30, 27, 27, 30.

.I hope this DAT Breakdown helps anyone preparing to take the DAT. Let me know if you have any questions! 🙂 .

Congrats on ur score!
I have a week left until my test and I took an achiever test today but did not do well on it.. 🙁
bio 18
gc 19
oc 18
pat 17 (guessed C's on last 6 problems because i ran out of time),
rc 15 (ran out of time again and guessed C's for last 7 questions)
qr 22

do you think I should postpone my test?

Great job Zelda! What materials did you use for the chems (gchem and ochem)? Thanks in advance!

Well I think these scores are pretty good for achiever. When I was taking achiever, I was getting nervous since my scores were pretty low (similar to your scores). I also had trouble finishing RC since I thought RC was much harder than the real thing. On average I think people usually get +3 on most sections and total score. Also the achiever test get harder after the first one. I think test 5 was the hardest. I think you should try a topscore test or the ADA 2009 test to get the most accurate projection of your dat score.

I used the Kaplan blue book for a quick review of both g-chem and o-chem. I used DATQVAULT and DAT destroyer for the problem sets. I also used some of my SAT 2 and AP chemistry materials (AP and SAT 2 Kaplan and Princeton Review) for extra practice. Overall, I think DAT destroyer and DATQVAULT are more than enough.

Congrats on your score
Sounds like you get higher than your topscore tests... Do you think that topscore gives the best estimation about the real test?

People how do u take those test practice ones ?? Where are those coming from? I have practice materials that I use to study but I need to practice sample tests !!! Please tell me I really need to know!!! I was hoping to get Top score but I have Mac and top score is on,y made for PC please help!!!

Fantastic scores! Also I really like your username (whether you mean the game or the actual name). Haha

The 2007 ADA test is free. You can access this test at http://www.ada.org/dat.aspx. Using the same link, you can purchase the 2009 ADA test.

You can also purchase the DAT achiever tests at http://www.3tquest.com/index.php?module=products&id=1.

You can get more DAT test by purchasing the Kaplan blue book and the Barron's book.

Yeah I think topscore is a very good indicator of how you will do on the real thing. Also the 2009 ADA test is a good indicator.

i take my test on tuesday. i basically feel like doing nothing at this point. do you think you performed at the same level as during your practice tests?
I'm scared because none of the practice tests will actually reflect the score of what you may end up getting...some people score way higher, some people lower, some people around the same.
I'm kinda worried because I've been scoring 20-22ish. If the real thing is way harder, then I'm so screwed....I'm just praying that it'll be easier 🙁 help!

Hi,

What method did you use for angle ranking in PAT? Plz message me... I am doing poorly in that section....

I think you are in good shape. I also scored around 20-22 on most of my practice exams. While, I was taking the test, I felt I performed the same on all the sections. I was happily surprised that I did quite a bit better than what I usually did on the practice exams. I would have to say that I felt the actual test felt easier for gen chem, orgo, and reading. I felt the bio section was on the harder side. The PAT and math were about the same as the practice tests that I took. So I think if you perform like you normally do, you will be fine. With a bit of luck, I think you can crack 23+. Good luck!

Hi,

What method did you use for angle ranking in PAT? Plz message me... I am doing poorly in that section....

I also had some trouble with this section during my practice exams. I basically would look at the answer choices and compare the smallest and largest answers. By doing this, I could quickly narrow down the answers to two choices. I usually went with my gut to get the final answer. I pretty much used my gut instinct to determine if an angle was smaller/ larger than another angle. I also sometimes used the labtop method (imagine the angle to be a laptob and determine which would be easiest to close-smaller the angle, easier to close).

Why are percentiles different for different people? I got a 20 in Bio and it said that wa 86.5 percentile. I got a 21 AA and it says that's 91.3 percentile and I saw another person on here had a picture of their score report and it says like 96.5 percentile.

Anyone know?

My feeling is that each test is different and the percentiles are based on the scores of past test takers for a particular exam. I think the 0-30 scale is fairly consistent across all exams (some test are slightly more forgiving, but I think most are relatively similar). Thus, I think the percentiles are a good indicator to show if one test was more difficult than other tests or if a particular section of a test was more difficult. So if a person got a 22 with a percentile of 90% on RC for one exam and another person got a 22 with a percentile of 95% on RC for another exam, my feeling is that the second person had a tougher RC section and arguably a "better score".

great scores, how long did you study?

Thanks! I studied a little over 2 months (beginning at the end of may all the way up to test day). IFor the first month, I mostly reviewed my sciences and did some practice PAT test from CrackDAT.I picked up my studying at the end of June when I started to take practice exams. During this time, I spent about 5-7 hours studying a day.

I think you and I took the same DAT (same date, same RC passages). You killed it. I didn't do as well as you, but I have no idea how you did so well on those RC passages. I found them to be exceedingly difficult. I didn't think I was going to get a 17, more like an 18 or 19, but yikes.

Yeah I am pretty sure we took the same DAT. Where did you take it at? I took mine in NJ. I thought RC was about the same compared to the practice material I had. I think I did pretty well on this section because I prepared a great deal for RC. When I started, I was having a real hard time finishing the passages and getting pretty low scores so I knew I had to study this section big time. I came up with the method that I mentioned in the breakdown and it really helped me to increase my scores. I also felt a little lucky that I had some background on the neuroscience passage and the gene/ cancer passage so that really helped. I think you probably panicked a little bit on the RC and ran out of time, but I think 17 on RC is still OK and your overall AA is good enough for top dental schools. Good luck!
