I applied to this program but can't decide if it's good or not, so I thought this forum could help sort it out. It's in highly-desirable Austin, Texas. It's community-based but is expected to be taken over by the University of Texas at Galveston in a year. So it will remain a community program with a university label. They rotate in a private psych inpatient hospital primarily but also have rotations at the county hospital for C&L, and also participate in community clinics. They only have 4-5 full-time faculty, but they also have about 20-30 (or more) volunteer faculty.

My interest at this point is private practice, so I am trying to determine if this program will give me adequate training. I am not sure if it will be good enough to give graduates the option of academia.

Here is their URL:

Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated!

I too am interested in the program. Mainly location and the fact they accept pgy-2 spots. I'm an Internist who after 4 years of general practice within the military desires to return to my original like..psychiatry and finish a residency so I can transition from Im to Psych.

The UT Galveston thing...how'd you hear 'bout that and is it true?

On a separate note..residency is residency..I did a big brutal powerhouse IM residency and work with people who scraped by small crappy programs and they are just as qualified and compensated. academia is another story.

I rotate at the Austin location for several different rotations and have heard that UTMB is assuming control of all of the programs there. They have already taken over medicine and OBG.

hi! i was wondering if you got any answers to your questions. Im applying for the 2007 match and am also interested in the austin program. Would appreciate it if you could share your views. Thanks!

Also, just FYI, the UTMB thing is a fact. You can check it out on their website.
