Hi,
I'm a third-year student at a US public flagship considering Medicine and exploring options like MD/MBBS programs abroad. Although I struggled early on with biology (C- in Gen Bio and D- in Botany), I've improved in applied bio and earth sciences, and I’m currently doing well in General Chemistry I. My GPA is 3.2 with an upward trend.

I’ve been doing well on practice GRE/MCAT quizzes, even without all the prerequisites. Initially, I planned to take the remaining pre-reqs after graduation, but I’m now considering five-year programs abroad, like those in the UK, Ireland, or Australia, since they have fewer entry requirements. Costs would be similar to out-of-state MD/DO* programs. UK/IE has five year MBBS programs, Australia has five year BS/MD programs. They seem to be a better option than the Caribbean schools, but I could be wrong.

However, I’m concerned about the competitiveness of these programs, the challenges of studying abroad, and whether my early bio grades could affect my chances. I’m also wondering if it might be smarter to do a post-bacc in the US. I'm still figuring out if this path is right for me and know I need to shadow a physician first.

Thanks!

Note: I posted a similar post in the veterinary forum—this is because I have an interest in both professions and just wanted to see if I have a chance to pursue either profession.

You should go to school in the country you plan to practice in. It's way more complicated than finishing school and coming back; you have to take all the American licensing exams as well and basically be out in a register that puts you at a supreme disadvantage for residency training. Without residency, you're unemployed.

Dig deep and grind the last two years to get into a USMD/DO school.
