I heard there is a 4 year OD program now available in Australia.
Does anyone know the credibility of these or has anyone attended school their?
PRos /cons?
Will Canadians have to go through the bridging program at Waterloo?

I think it's at the University of Melbourne. If you want to come back to Canada and practice, I would contact the CAO (Canadian Associate of Optometrists) for more information~ About the credibility, I'm not sure, as far as I remember, a year back I'd looked into it and the program was not ready yet but it could have been another university~

ya it is the melbourne one. I think this is the first year they are offering it. I believe it used to be a Bachelor of Optometry b4. They say they are pending accrediation to be able to practice in NA..

Im thinking about it... very nervous to go that far, and with it being a new doctorate program it worries me that we might not be able to return easily. I think their tuition fees are within the 30K-32K range after converted to canadian currency so it's pretty in line with the american tuition rates. Are you applying?

Our degrees are recognized but you have to take an expensive (~$6000 AUD) written and practical exam which I've heard is difficult (on par with NBEO).

where would be better to go for a Canadian planning on practicing in Canada?
UK or Australia? I assume both programs need the briding program from Waterloo, yet one's a doctorate and one's a bachelors. I'm so confused by these degree equivalency things.

It would be because of cost, if i gots family in Australia/UK would make it a lot cheaper. From what I researched going from UK to Canada requires an 8 week bridging program to prepare you for the Canadian boards. Sounds simple but I'm sure theres more that I'm not hearing. Yea, I'm having a lot of trouble deciding where to apply.I'm a lost puppy!

As pointed out above, the tuition rates converted into Canadian currency would be similar to costs here in the US. If cost is the only reason, I don't see why you would risk it.

I have actually applied to the program at UofMelbourne and have been accepted into it but I am still undecided as to whether or not I want to go there. I have spoken to someone at Waterloo and they told me that an 8 week bridging program would have to be completed when I come back, however the University of Melbourne is in the process of getting accreditation in North America so the bridging program would not have to be completed (I believe this takes a while though?)

Anyways I was just wondering if anyone has thoughts about this new OD program? Or if they have heard of anyone who has completed their degree overseas and gone through the bridging program?

I am also looking to apply to the states as well but since I am already accepted into the program at Asutralia I am wondering if I should just go there?

can I know your stats? i was thinking about applying to melbourne.... i looked on their site and they said that since this year (enrolling fall 2011) is the first year of admission into the od program, they do not have a academic profile yet... I'm planning on applying into the enrolling fall 2012 cycle.

If you want to practice here in the US, you have to graduate from an American OD school. So if you go to school abroad, you'd have to spend more time in school here and then take all three parts of national boards.
