Automatic A in D1 biochemistry

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone know if this is at any other school(especially UAB) and if it is a similar procedure where you get an "A" rather than something like CLEPing out of a course. Also has anyone heard or know of this type of thing for any other classes(i read something similar about physiology before) and the details
Tahnks

I have asked around and I haven't found any other classes at Loma Linda. Realistically, where else are you going to take 'head and neck anatomy' or similarly dent-specific classes.

General Anatomy seems like a class that might work though. E-mail the prof. at your school. Worst case he/she doesn't reply. Making their aquaintance and forming a possitive impression could be even better than getting out of the class.

you can probably exempt microbiology..

I have heard that dental students with a biochem background have the option to take a CLEP test in lieu of the D1 biochemistry class. So, I e-mailed the biochemistry Prof. at LL U school of Dentistry.

Its TRUE! Here is his response;

The students who had biochemistry before have an opportunity to be
exempted from course quizzes and exams provided they meet both of the
following criteria:

1. A score of at least 80% is obtained on an ACS standardized
biochemistry exam to be taken the evening following the first D1
biochemistry lecture at L LU.

2. Willingness to serve as a biochemistry tutor to fellow D1 class
mates. (Tutors are expected to maintain a record of time spent in
tutoring, and to produce such records when so requested by course
director.)

3. If the above conditions are met, top 10 of these qualified students
will be awarded a grade of "A" in D1 biochemistry
, and will be exempted
from further course examinations.

Now here is the deal. I just took the ACS standardized biochemistry test (I got 90% percentile). And I wrote down 25 of the 60 questions. I can't post them on the internet. However, if anyone has also taken the test I would be happy to compare notes.

I am starting as a D1 in the fall at Loma Linda and would be very interested in this. It says we are supposed to take the ACS exam the night prior to the first biochemistry lecture so does that mean you have to retake it? Also, where would I go to take this test (maybe a Sylvan learning center like the DAT?)?? Is Dr. Lessard teaching biochem next year?

Does any current Dschool student at LLU hav info or experience with this they can share? thanks! 🙂

Yeah, if you can, bone up on Biochem for the two weeks before school starts. Even if you don't get above 80th percentile, he still lets the top few people in the class serve as tutors for some bonus points.

The ACS biochemistry exam is no joke, I took it last year and scored 92 percentile but I really think I got lucky. I have taken the ACS gen chem, orgo chem, and biochem, and biochem was the toughest. I would say about 75% of the test is pretty simple, and most questions were not too bad, but that other 25% was supremely challenging. Some questions I just guessed and hoped for the best.

I wish marquette offered something like that..

do we have to memorize amino acid composition? which pathways? any insight would help... I'm not really sure what to study. I've taken biochem and am familiar with the big picture of it as well as concepts, but I don't know what I have to memorize... can anybody help me at all? Thanks so much!!!

Meh, I was a biochem major and I didn't even bother asking. It's nice having a low/no pressure refresher before the boards, and I learn something new every here and there.

I thought that too, until 9pm the night before our first exam, and felt bad for not studying. Right now its a breeze, but I probably will have to put in some studying later in the semester during biosynthesis. Right when you leave glycolysis and TCA on the chart it gets pretty challenging. Although most amino /nucleic acid isn't too challenging, its just a lot of information. Most of the enzymes are pretty easy to remember. I am assuming the later part of the semester will actually be easier then my undergrad experience, I won't have to work out mechanisms for tests.

I know, but that's kind of the reason I want to take it. Refresher!
