Hey, I'm a med student who's getting more and more interested in Anesthesiology, but unfortunately, I will have significant debt when I graduate. Thus, salary plays a role in my decision on which field to pursue. II also don't want to necessarily pursue a fellowship. I want to practice in or around Chicago, and what I've found in terms of job openings on gaswork.com typically has general anesthesiology salaries starting in the low to mid 200K's. Is this typical for B & B Anesthesia? BTW, I'm not saying that's low or high.

You will be fairly likely to be able to repay debt as an anesthesiologist. Chicago salaries are generally on the lower end based on what I have seen. I am sure there are better earning groups within Chicago, but living a little further away will likely net you far more. Sorry for lacking numbers, but the public forum isn't the best place for that in my opinion.

Yeah, I was just wondering how accurate it was.

You've probably heard this before, but by limiting your geographic ideal to a relatively small area, you're tremendously limiting your potential.

It doesn't necessarily have to be Chicago (though I would greatly prefer it). The greater Chicagoland area would be acceptable too, but I get what you're saying.

The more desirable an area/workplace, the smaller the salaries (higher supply of physicians).

How much is someone giving up by choosing Chicago over a more rural place, say like 50-60 miles outside of Chicago? Is it 50K? 100K?

It really depends. You'll make around 300k working for an AMC in Chicago and probably just a little less in academics. My guess would be about 250k as a group employee with 3-5 years to partner. If there are no super partners, you'll probably make a similar amount of money as people would make outside of Chicago once you make partner.

I would be fine making $250K, honestly. I just hope things don't get much worse than that.
