Average DO LizzyM

Mcat + (gpa x 10).

Mcat + (gpa x 10).

How would someone use LizzyM to gauge themselves if they have a large discrepancy between cgpa and sgpa?

My science GPA is a 3.75, my cumulative is a 3.1. I've aced high level science classes but unfortunately performed (very) poorly in my freshmen classes (which were taken almost 13 years ago now).

Is my poor performance in english 101, etc really going to be weighted equal to my acing physiology, genetics, ochem, etc?

I think its based on overall.

Apparently overall is what schools use to rank applicants.

In that case the equation is not for you. It's created under the notion that your gpas are not significantly different.

Is there some sort of guideline for someone in my position?

I'm at 61 as well. I feel ever more at a disadvantage because my MCAT is low. I'm still really hoping to get some love from a few schools though.

You dont think my 3.1 will keep me out of schools? This is assuming I don't score 30+ on MCAT....

It's not great, but many schools will pay consideration to later credits. If you're recent gpa is good you'll probably be fine.

But either way, with a high sci gpa you should be good.

I wouldn't rely on just the LizzyM score as a means to see if I'm competitive for osteopathic schools. Allo schools are much more number driven than anything else. There's a lot you can do in the osteo world to make up for a low MCAT or GPA.

I am a 61 as well. 3.7 GPA and 24 ( 8/8/8) MCAT

Don't worry about averages so much. Somebody got into CUSOM with 3.2/22, and others got into ACOM and PCOM Ga with ~3.25 sci gpa/23. They are not atypical cases.

Anyone and everyone can get into new schools. The 3.3/23 had a masters though.

Not trying to sound greedy, but I would be really excited to go to some of the more "MCAT heavy" schools.

As of now my DO school list consists of:
AZCOM
DMU
KCUMB
KCOM
RVU
LMU-DCOM
NSU
TUNCOM
OSU-CHS (as an OOS)
TCOM (as an OOS)

fwiw I feel like my ECs are pretty good, but the whole process feels like such a crapshoot

+1

Triage is right. 👍

Isn't your mcat above 27?
27 exactly. I used (gpa*10) + (MCAT-1) as there was a previous (allo) thread saying this particular calculation was more accurate.

Accurate in what sense? Regardless you're at 62 by the normal LizzyM equation. Not to mention if you apply early it's +1.

Context my friend, context. The original point of the LizzyM score is to estimate your chances of getting into a school based on their average matriculant stats. People suggest subtracting from the score to give you a more "realistic" view of getting in due to people with lower stats that have other advantages you don't have. That way, you don't think you are shoe-in for a school when your stats are dead average.

The LizzyM is score is as serenade said. That is its definition. You can tweak it yourself however you want for your own uses.

As far as what's average for DO, I'd say most of the schools have averages between 58-62.

That LizzyM score seems to be high for DO.... (3.15*10 + X) = 62... I will need to redouble my effort to get that 30 mcat score. I thought I was going to be ok with 28. My sGPA is 3.35... Shouldn't that give me some leeway?

I have the same exact GPA and a 28 on the mcat. That's 61.5 or 62 if I round it up 😛. Some suggest that you also add one point for being an early applicant.

DO averages are at 3.48/ 26.8.
Which leads to a 61.6 average.

Last year the mean MCAT for entering students was 26.85 and the mean GPA was 3.49 = LizzyM of 61.75. Some schools are higher, obviously, and some are lower. It's really just a good guideline for those who are deficient in one or the other scores, so if your GPA is low but you hit 30+ on the MCAT you know approximately where you stand. For the person asking what you can do to make up for a poor GPA or MCAT, don't forget about grade replacement. You can repeat the classes you bombed and it will boost your GPA. Retake the MCAT if necessary and wait a year to apply. Get more shadowing, do some research, and even more overlooked I think is to do something significant that you can talk about in essays / interviews: train for a marathon, write a book, start a business, go on a medical mission trip, etc.

How many points does URM get you? I remember LizzyM saying that being a veteran is up to 5 points.

Our sGPA might be the same but your overall is higher than mine... I think I should be ok with a 27+ mcat since I am willing to go anywhere....

That's a pretty good list. Might I suggest adding ATSU-SOMA and one or two of the new schools (ACOM and Marian, perhaps?)

Edit: LECOM would be one to look at, too.

What were the other additions for LizzyM?
I know I'm at 60 (including the +1 for submitting early) but I remember there being other extras as well.

That's it. The original LizzyM is just GpaX10 + Mcat + 1 ( If early app).

Is that sGPA or cGPA?

It's cGPA; however, I think if there a big gap b/t your GPAs i.e. 3.2cGPA and 3.5sGPA , it's better to average them out.... At least that what I do in my case so I can feel a little bit better about my chances... Lol.

58.5 I got in.

AACOMAS
cGPA 3.37
sGPA 3.4
MCAT 26 (7V 9P 10B)

Lizzy = ~60 +1 (apply early) +1 (URM) +1 (3 publications) = 63

TMDSAS
cGPA 3.2
sGPA 3.16
MCAT 26 (7V 9P 10B)

Lizzy = ~58 +1 (apply early) +1 (URM) +1 (3 publications) = 61

DO here I come 😀

I would add 2-3 for URM AA and 1 for Hispanics since average MCAT for AA and Hispanics are 23 and 25 respectively...
