Do any of you know what the average (cumulative) GPA upon graduation is at your university? Also, specifically the science departments. I feel if the average graduating GPA of science majors was a 3.5, it may be viewed as very inflated. What about a 3.25, or a 3.0? That doesn't seem that high, but it is still a B average. Remember this is for cumulative GPA though.

Any comments? I'm curious as to where my university may stand on the "inflation scale".

This probably isn't a hard thing to figure out. At the end of the semester my school emailed everyone something sort of like a report card that has each class you took listed, the av class gpa, the av gpa of the student, %majors and your standing in each course. Your school might have something similar if you poke around the registrar's site. Regardless, do the best you can in your classes. I highly doubt grade inflation is a major factor in med school acceptance if everything else in the app is solid 🙂.

I think 3.1-2 ish depends on the department most bio majors have a <3.0 which makes my GPA looks spectacular even though it's not that competitive yet.

I previously tried this, and I got everything they had but they don't publish graduating GPA. Through my connections through the science department, I got an "unofficial" number though.

The grade inflation at my school was absolutely rampant amongst the humanities (I'm talking 3.6-3.7), but the average GPA in my major was a 3.1.

Depends on major. At my school Bio majors averaged ~2.6 while music majors averaged 3.95. There were a good number of articles in the school newspaper about grade inflation last year and those statistics come straight out of that article. I wish I could find it online but im too lazy.

I don't think it's really fair to judge your performance from the average of your entire undergrad. Liberal arts majors tend to have averages in the mid 3.0s (grade inflation is more rampant in the liberal arts)

You should look at the average GPA in your specific major and judge how you're doing from there.
