I know that medical malpractice differs amongst different specialties but is there a link or does anyone know what the average cost of medical malpractice premium is and what the average salary is for physicians as a whole?

We had a lecture in Healthcare Management today about physician contracts. It included a portion about getting malpractice coverage through your employer. The lecturer showed us average malpractice rates for IM and it varied from ~$14,000 in LA to ~$50-60,000 in Miami. For general surgery it varied from ~$55,000 in LA up to ~$200,000 in Miami. So it really does depend on where you wanna live and practice

From what I've seen, it can be as little as $3000 (for Internal Medicine in a very tort-reform friendly area) to upwards of $300,000 (for OB/GYNs in certain parts of florida). As has been mentioned, its dependent largely on your specialty, your previous record, but above all, your location.

Makes you wonder why any doctor would practice in Florida at all.

Why worry? It's gotta be a lot more than nurses or Physician Assistants right? I mean, nurses and PAs go to a few years of schooling in their professions too, but only Nurse Anethesthesia

As doctor, you make good living while helping people. Good enough. I hope to be physician/surgeon even if it's half the pay... BUT UPS drivers and plumbers actually make more money if spread over a lifetime and early investments right after HS. They don't pay MedMal either.

If you worry about malpractice for doctor being high, maybe Nurse Anesthetist? Some nurses outearn doctors.

"numerous salary reports throughout the years report that CRNAs remain the highest compensated of all nursing specialties. Their average reported annual salary range in 2007, reported by the AMGA Medical Group Compensation and Financial Survey, was $140,013"
