Just curious about resident's salary... Internal medicine and general surgery. I know it is not much, but wondering about the actual value these days...

That's about right, but throw out the high end numbers if you aren't in a high cost of living place like NYC. Generally interns are getting 47-48k. It goes up a grand or two each y ear. By third year you are breaking 50k. It's good money if you are coming right from college, but lousy money if you are coming from another career.

That works out to be somewhere between $11/hr and $14/hr depending on your hours.
On the other hand, nowhere else do you get a 200-400% raise after 3 years (or 5 for gen surg).

very interesting chart on page 5 ...looks like residents are making more money now (adjusted for inflation) than ever before except for a few years in the early 70s
