Average step 3 results

Hey guys, i am an IMG and i was wondering what is the average step 3 results that people are getting when they do this exam during residency. I guess it would sort of depend on your residency program too, i mean psychiatry as opposed to Internal medicine, but what is the average grade people are getting?

I really don't mean to be flippant when I say that the average grade is "pass".

I second the above. The average grade is indeed "pass."

I think "literally" the average score is somewhere around 215.

The actual average (mean) is probably on the USMLE website somewhere.

But if you're asking about what score to shoot for, I agree with the above posters - just aim to pass.

ok, thanks guys, i was just wondering cos i got 86 and i have not even started residency yet. I just did it to boost my visa chances and my overall application. I am applying to IM.

For most of us, Step 3 is just a thing we do to get it out of the way. Other than passing for your state licensure or for those going into an extremely competitive fellowship (and even with this I wonder how big a factor Step 3 plays in), the score doesn't play much of a role.

As for IMG's, I'm not sure how much of a factor Step 3 plays either. But maybe a residency program director, who takes a few IMG's and posts in these forums, would be able to clarify.

The USMLE specifically stopped publishing this anywhere several years ago, because they felt that people were misinterpreting the data.

I expect that most PD's lump Step 3 in with the other steps. A good score helps, a poor score hurts. An 86 is a reasonable score.

PD's who offer H visas will probably want to see a Step 3 score early, as Step 3 is required for H visas.
