The Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Application Process: An Analysis of the Applicant Experience.
Students applied to 83 ± 27 programs, received 17 ± 10 interviews, and attended 12 ± 5 interviews. Interview offers correlated with, in descending order, Alpha Omega Alpha status, Step 2 Clinical Knowledge, and Step 1. The mean time to reply of interview offer was 17 minutes, yet 25% of the applicants lost at least one interview despite having at least one other person monitor the applicant's e-mail account.

I heard that programs weren't allowed to offer more invites for applicants than they had spots to interview, specifically to discourage the culture of "REPLY IN 1 MNUTE OR DIE!!" But this may have just been a rumor.

They don't and didn't follow this rule last cycle. Some of my EM invites filled within two minutes at most.

Clearly being excessively hyperaware of all emails and having super human email response time is the REAL number one trait theyre looking for

I remember being on my sub-i’s being scrubbed into cases and hearing my email go off for interviews. I had to decide on pissing off the attending and scrubbing out of their case or being too late to reply to an interview invite.

I do not miss those days one bit.
