I'm just curious as to what the average workweek looks like for an emergency physician. Specifically, how many days out of the week and how long are the shifts for an emergency physician in a more rural area. I know what the work schedule looks like for my local docs but was wondering how it compared to elsewhere. Perhaps this thread would be better suited for the pre-med. forums, but I thought I would give it a shot here. Thanks!

While I was working as a PCA at the hospital generally the EM physicians worked either a 40 hr work week with a 12/14/14 shift week or some did the 12/14/14/ and worked another day (12-16 hrs) at the open clinic associated with the local university. Most that I worked with did the later.

The docs at my ED work 16-20 8 hour shifts a month, 3-4 of which are overnight shifts. The rest of the shifts are split between day and evening shifts.

Ditto this verbatim for the docs at my ED.
