Hey folks,

I just got my COMLEX score back 522/84 and was not too impressed since I was getting close to 600 on practice tests. Anyways, I was wondering what kind of shot I had at a DO ortho residency considering this score and the fact that I will be doing an OMM fellowship. Will the fellowship help in any way?

I have good research experience and am at the top 20% of my class, and did not take USMLE btw.

Thanks for your replies!

from what i understand, just doing the fellowship means you're a shoe in for an ortho spot....j/k, I don't think its a good or bad thing, but i think some residents might actually laugh at you for it.

Your board score isn't the greatest, but its above average. You have grades and research, providing you're not an absolute tool you still have a good shot of getting a DO spot.

what do you think about someone with 591 comlex and 228 USMLE? top 33% of class, but definetly not top 15%...no research either.

It's good to know that I would still be competitive, but an OMM fellowship wouldn't help in any way? I mean, wouldn't it at least help distinguish me from a pool of thousands?

Why do DO students ask about chances at OSTEOPATHIC residency programs and then post their USMLE score?

Guys, listen...carefully. If you want a DO spot you HAVE TO ROTATE AT THAT PROGRAM. Your board score is worth a 50 cent cup of coffee in most cases with DO programs. I'm serious. If you have a 600+ then it will work in your favor but if you don't you're only screwed if you don't rotate (and do well, obviously).

I think those OMM fellowships are good for people going into FP, IM type fields. They can market themselves bigtime as "NMM specialists" and rake it in (all cash).

It would be nice if we had something like the MD’s have where they can see average board score stats for certain specialties. Anyone out there know of the best resource for this type of information? Or at least want to give there perspective on sub 600 and matching DO ortho?

Yeah I agree with you on this. I've heard from attendings and residents that programs make their decisions based on how well you can work with the team and how cool you are to chill with on the weekends. Board scores don't mean as much in ortho as they do in other fields.

i understand the easy to work with, but the fun to chill with on the weekends? where are these magical ortho programs that have free time?

The ortho program that I am at went out last night and we the students went with.

We were all still there at 5am.
