I think you can do it through your control panel. I forgot how I did mine exactly, but I googled for a drosophila pic, with the advanced "icon sized" option. Then, I think I uploaded it in the control panel.
 
I get the picture (any picture file), cut off only the essential part, and use an image program to resize it to 50X50 pixel, then save it as JPEG.

Goto Control Panel, somewhere you're able to upload a file for your avatar, you upload your file and viola!
 
1)
go to site with thumbnails
2)right click the thumbnail you like
3)save target as
4)on top of this page, under the sdn blue banner, click user cp
5)edit options, select a custom avatar
