Avoid other premeds

I dont know about you guys, but i avoid "the others" like the black death. At my school there is this superiority complex with the whole pre med game, and I would rather just not associate with the other pre meds. I think not knowing what you are up against is better because you can focus on your own work.
 
Most of my closest friends are pre-med. We help each other out all the time, study together and are there to support each other.
 
It depends on the type of premed.. Ex. Super competitive backstabber= avoid
Normal premed/nice guy= Ok 🙂
 
I wouldn't say you should avoid every pre-med cause you might be missing out on the support you get from other students that are going through the same thing you are. However, I do kinda feel you. You have to seek out a good group of friends that arent so elitist and have not yet been infected with gunnerism.

In my experience, the group of pre-meds I knew during post-bacc were soo much cooler than the undergrad pre-meds I went to school with. You might have to work a lil harder to find some mature younger pre-meds.

Why in gods name are you on this forum then. This is where all the closet premeds go, the ones who don't want to have the "pre-med" mentality and like to talk about how much they hate premeds. Stop lying to yourself. There are 6-10 pre-allo regulars who I am specifically refereing to. You know who you are. Those that truly dissociate run from both other pre-meds and SDN. They hang out with history majors and spend there time playing farmville on facebook.

Not all pre-meds are those pre-meds. I personally always shared notes, advice, and anything else to help the next person. Those favors weren't always returned, but altruism isn't about self-gain.
 
Maybe it's because I go to a small school and there are relatively few of us, but we tend to be of the mentality that we're not competing against each other and ideally we'll all get into med school, so none of us mind doing things like exchanging MCAT tips/materials, passing along opportunities we hear about and helping each other study for exams.

Sure, avoid the d-bags, but there were a handful of pre-meds in college that I was good friends with who are all residents now.

Most of the "pre meds" from my class never made it. They did talk a big game though. A couple went into optometry and podiatry though.:meanie:
I hung out with a couple of "outsiders" we all made it.👍
 
Being a bio major, I feel like just about every one of my classmates is pre-(insert health profession here). Some are ridiculous tools who think they're the ****, parading their grades and accomplishments around when they actually don't know much about this whole process, and others are decent, down to earth people. Guess which ones I associate with.
 
My best two buddies were premeds, but the relaxed kind. One that I knew from middle school didnt make it, and the other from my fraternity got severely behind. I guess out of this group I was the gunner.... which was only reflected by the fact that i got in.

However, I never really became close friends with the traditional pre med.

I find that a lot of newer premed who hasn't taken a lot of courses are somewhat arrogant. Many think they're really smart because they're premeds, lol. But once they've taken the more difficult courses, they usually humble down, 😀

Completely agree. I generally don't like to associate with other pre-meds. But the nontrad premeds I've worked with in labs have been amazing people.

lol i find it funny that people think all pre-med students are super competitive, and will sabotage you at any chance they get. I also think its funny that people don't like to identify themselves as premed (wut??). Students are students, you just have to find the ones that aren't *******s.
btw if you don't wanna know what you are up against, you shouldn't be on this website.
 
It's really hard to fit pre-meds into a general stereotype. Some pre-meds will be arrogant jerks, just like there are always arrogant jerks in the general population. I have seen some hardcore pre-meds that go all out and refuse to help their fellow students, but according to my experiences they are more of an exception.

Dont get me wrong- I do have one good pre med friend- my best friend actually. But maybe I'm just too competitive to associate with the competition. To be totally honest, my only pre med friend isn't exactly competition to me- He plans on going to the carribean w/o even applying here b/c he knows he won't get in🙁. Sad but true.

fair point, my friend- I think it's the up close and personal thing that doesn't sit with me😳
 
All the pre-meds at my undergrad were awesome people. Non-trads and trads alike. Everyone went out of their way to help everyone else. The students that got on my nerves were the 19-20 yr olds that boasted about how they won this scholarship, had the hardest major, and just plain acted immature and unfriendly.

There was this one dude who thought he was sweet because he didn't take notes in Gen Chem, was a biomedical engineer major, and was in the army. 🙄 Way to go bro, you succeeded in not making any friends and looking like a dink. Trying to impress people is lame. It just makes you look like a douche.
 
I see both sides of the "coin" really. At my undergrad there are some gunner pre-meds....really GUNNER. They show up to our pre-med club meetings just to "scout" the competition. They will sit and ask you about research experience, leadership, BLAH BLAH BLAH. It sucks. One of our club committee members wants to drop out of the club because she isn't sure if "helping out other pre-meds" is a smart thing to do. WTF?

On the other hand, I have two good friends who are pre-meds. We study together, have lab together and always try to help others out. I think in general, pre-meds can be sort of douchey but thats probably because we are constantly having to be pretty damn good at everything. I don't think it would be safe to say that all pre-meds are rude and inconsiderate though. You just have to find the right ones.
 
I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but the opposite sex pre-med tends to be more generous to each other than those of the same sex. I do have a few chillaxed pre-med friends, but the majority of them are guys, while the females just seem uber competitive towards other girls. Weird, eh?

I have a bunch of pre-med friends and they're all great people. There are some pre-meds who I know that are very hardcore schoolwise and extracurricular wise. I tend not to associate with them too much.

I don't think this is unique to med school but yea I agree. As soon as I start I'm going to seek out my completely platonic guy friend to study with and add on more friends from there.

Don't wanna derail the thread topic but guys have it so good. Girls have to watch their backs a lot more 👎
 
I date another pre-med x-x. I see where (s)he is coming from though. I am always nice to other pre-meds and stuff but at this moment while med school acceptances are pending they are my direct competition, so I'm going to be avoiding them for the next 2ish weeks until I hear back
 
I hated all the pre-meds that I had undergrad with, except for 2. And sadly, those 2 probably aren't going to get into med school :laugh: I am hoping that I will enjoy my company more in medical school.

Cool.

I'm glad because no one else has a superiority complex in medicine. And your M1 class should be full of cool, normal people like yourself.

Premeds sure spend a lot of time complaining about other premeds.

Everyone's going to come to their own conclusion based on life experiences. Based on my own I've learned to be very careful with girls. You might be one of the lucky ones that haven't experienced this as much 🙂.

It's not one or two cases 🙄.

My guy friends are super chill. I have to work soo much harder to find the same dynamic with girls. All my girl friends are (as I call them) down ass chicks that I've clung onto cause they're rare for me. I guess it's just me being picky.

I promised I wouldn't derail this thing but oh well..
 
Please do not tell me I am going to get into medical school and find 50-100 other accepted students who are all gunners that don't care much about life or learning except for how it better prepares them to bank six figures as a physician. Please tell I am going to meet people who will laugh at the absurdities, throw back some red wine, throw a knife or two and dance until exhaustion. 😉

Heh, our university is small enough that there's only about 10-20 of us. Usually people tend to help each other out as opposed to the more competitive nature that you find at some bigger unis.

Interesting... at my school, most u/g pre-meds (myself included) didn't really hang out with post baccs because they were the gunners.

There is, of course, a happy medium here: be friends with pre-meds and non pre-meds. That way, when the pre-meds are making you crazy, e.g. two weeks before your MCAT, you can go hang out with a different group and get away from any level of stress or competition.

Be careful, though. Even though you're not in direct competition, some of the biggest gunners at my school were the MD applicants - it was those darned pre-laws.
