How hard is it to do away research in M1 summer? For instance, if there is a PI somewhere like Duke, Michigan, etc. who's research really interests you, how hard would it be to go there for 6-8 weeks? Is there an application process for that type of thing? Or cold contact? I'm just pretty uninformed about this kind of thing. Thanks you! Any feedback is appreciated!

People do it all the time, mostly by emailing PIs directly. The problem is that whatever you get done while you're there can be tough to finish up because of the distance. It's also easier to pick up projects during second year and beyond in the same lab if you work at your home institution. If you're familiar with the work and the PI, second and third projects are typically much faster to publication.

Cold email the PI.

Better yet, see if the department at your school is friendly with the department at the desired school and ask if they'll help you out.
