Has anyone had their away rotation offer rescinded due to a background check? I was a stupid college student that had gotten into some trouble. One was for a drunk in public thing but another one, I use to work at a bar as a bouncer in college. There was an incident where I was in the bathroom and there was a verbal altercation between me and drunk guy. Long story short, another bouncer came in and they got into a physical altercation where the drunk guy got really injured. I didnt touch the guy at all. Mind u I am 5'5 and the drunk guy was like 6'3.
However, the drunk guy stated I also attacked him. I was charged with a felony malicious wounding, I was going to fight it. However, the police officer went on vacation with the one video of the recording outside the bathroom and said that they lost the video. Tried to argue it with my lawyer but the court stated there wasn't sufficient evidence on the video to throw the case out.
Basically ended up having to make a deal. It was dropped down to a assault and battery conviction but under the Alford plea which is a guilty plea where a defendant acknowledges there's enough evidence for a conviction but maintains their innocence. This was 6 years ago. I am at a MD school in the USA and explained all of this to my medical school and they understood and still accepted me. However now I am doing an away rotation I really like but they are asking for a background check. I dont really know what to do in this situation any help would be great.
Tldr: was dumb and unlucky in college. Malicious wounding charge dropped to assault and battery conviction under alford plea. Explained this to my MD school during apps and they accepted me. Now am applying for away rotation that has background screening. Asking what to do in this situation and if anyone had their away rotation rescinded due to background check. Altercation was 6 years ago, havent had anything happen since.
