I'm considering the following places for away rotations -

UIC- Peoria
UIC- Chicago
Kalamazoo

Any advice on where I could get the best experience? Also, any word on how well known the faculty are in the EM world i.e. LORs? Thanks!

I'm obviously biased, but I think you should schedule an away rotation at Mayo Clinic. You'll see sick patients like you wont see anywhere else. You'll also have a chance to see a larger volume of patients as the efficiency of care is matched by very few places in the country. Just my $ 0.02

How competitive is Mayo's residency? I wouldn't mind rotating there, but I would also like to go somewhere I'd have a chance at matching at.

In that area I would add Indiana to the list. They're pretty competitive, but I rotated there and loved it. I learned a ton and we were actually treated like interns and gived a pretty large amount of autonomy (but with great teaching and guidance.) Plus, getting a letter from there wouldn't hurt your chances either.

I am from Indiana U (VP of EMSIG even). You will love the away rotation here if you come. do it at Wishard. Very awesome faculty and the PD is well known (but he is at Methodist so maybe you go there). also you get to write orders and such for basic stuff like fluids/pain mgmt before staffing if you are comfortable, and you can write other orders without a cosign which is sweet as a student.

Kalamazoo is an awesome program too. PD is on the RRC so he is very knowledgable. K-maz is my #1 on my match list so there you go.

Interviewed at UIC - Peoria as well, was ok. I would try to do an away somewhere else though.

I did my away in Denver (!). A great program and very far away. I wanted to get as far away as possible from home and go somewhere new and exotic to see what it was like. West coast medicine is much different than midwest/east coast and the patient population was much different. Added some diversity to my repertoire and showed that I was willing to move if I needed to. I would consider something like this, stepping outside your comfort zone for your away rotation, if you have this option. Just something to keep in mind.
