Scenario: I don't match my M4 year, don't SOAP, graduate, and take time to do research before applying the next cycle. Will I be able to do more away rotations before applying again? I was wondering because our med schools give us the VSAS token, but if I graduate I'm assuming they won't be able to give us one

You can do a clinical observership/medical shadow at some hospitals. Its like being a med student, but you aren't allowed to do physical exams on patients because you are not insured. It's a good way to do an "audition rotation" at a hospital you want to match at without officially doing one. It can also be done if you had graduated already. I did this at a hospital my school wasn't affiliated with and matched there.

Sorry to hijack, but do you know if programs will let M1’s do observerships during their summer? Seems like they’re for physicians by the verbiage off Cleveland Clinic’s site.

you cannot do away rotations if you have graduated medical school. if you don't match you should defer your graduation for the following year to improve your chances of matching, allow yourself to do further rotations, and continue to get the support of your medical school.

"observerships" are usually for people visiting and observing or foreign physicians to gain exposure to the US environment. As an MS1 you would not do observerships but would be able to shadow physicians during the summer, and may even be able to get more hands on experience than someone doing an observership. in some specialties there might be specific summer programs for medical students between the 1st and 2nd year of medical school.

I agree with splik. Observerships are mostly for those who did not match/ Foreign graduates hoping to get recommendations/ exposure in an institution they are interested in.

HI I was wondering if you could recommend some institutions which have a preference to interview candidates that rotate at their institutes.

So can you do like 6 away rotations the next year since you wouldn't have any other clinical requirements to fulfill?
