Hi guys. I just got an away rotation at a hospital I am interested in for residency (an "audition rotation"). The only month they had available was November, and I took the spot. Someone said to me that I should be interviewing in November, so this was a bad time for scheduling a rotation in a place where I'm interested in residency.

So, will it be possible for me to try to schedule all of my interviews in October, December & January? I don't want to be disappearing from the rotation if I'm trying to put my best face forward.

Also, is November considered too late to "audition", or have programs not necessarily decided on offering you an interview yet? I plan to submit my ERAS in early September.

Thanks all!

Most programs do not start interviewing until November.

I am also doing an away rotation that ends Nov. 20. I asked before hand if I would be allowed several days off for interviews if needed. However, I will try to arrange most of my interviews for Dec and January because I feel it probably looks bad to leave an away rotation to go interview at another place. But I still wanted the option, and they said "sure, a lot of our students do this." So I don't think it's a big deal. Another option is if the interview is on a Friday, you can just ask for a personal day off, or to switch that Friday with a weekend day. There are options for you.

Most fourth year students I have talked to had the majority of their interviews in January. You can certainly arrange to have most of them within two months; December and January.

In addition, you might be able to do an interview at the place during your rotation so that you don't have to fly back. Some places offer this. You just need to ask.

No, November is not "too late" to audition. Basically anytime before March is not too late too audition, unless you are using the rotation as a stepping stone to getting the interview (ie-you think would not be interviewed there with your ERAS application alone).

Since November was the only spot they had open, I think it would be better to do the away rotation and try to work your interview schedule around it, rather than not doing a rotation at a school you are seriously considering.

If I hadn't been offered an interview based on my ERAS alone, or if they were still deciding, is November (I start on the 1st) too late? When do they usually accept/reject based on the ERAS if you submit ERAS in early September?

Thanks again.

I don't know. I'm pretty sure people get interview invites up until January.

P.S. you can easily do a search on SDN to find this out.

Go to FREIDA online on the AMA website to see the interview dates of allopathic residencies you are interested in. I can understand why you wouldn't want to leave an audition rotation for interviews (another post is correct, most places don't start interviewing until Nov.). If the place you are rotating at offers you an interview, you can always request that it be done while on your rotation to save on travel expenses (i.e. Baystate Medical center offers interviews to 4th years rotating in EM during their rotation). :luck:

I interviewed in surgery, and I had the option of interviewing in December or January for every program I interviewed at, although if I had been trying to interview at a lot of places it would have been difficult for scheduling purposes to get them all in two months. A friend of mine had a week where he was in three different cities on two coasts during one week -- which is kind of brutal. You might be in for weeks like that if you try to schedule everything for Dec/Jan.
