So basically I'm interested in a residency at a certain university and I'd like to do an away rotation at that university in my 4th year in order to both get a better understanding of the university as well as better my chances of getting an interview. The only issue is that doing it in October would be inconvenient for me while doing it in November would be much easier although I'll have lots of interviews that month.

My question is: does doing an away rotation in October instead of November make a significant difference to help you get an interview at that location?

I'd avoid an away rotation in a month when you think you will need to miss any days for interviews. When you are on an away, you should be fully committed to that rotation.

Any other thoughts?

My feeling is that any program that penalizes me for missing a couple of days for interviews during interview season is not a place I want to train. They know it is November as much as you do.

That said, it is just my view.

I've heard several anecdotes from upper classmen regarding this situation. All were positive stories. I wouldn't stress too much about it.

The first bit of advice you got is solid. While it's true that you likely won't be dinged for missing a day or two for legit reasons, you're taking a risk by going on an audition rotation during interview season. Also, if you really want to "better" your chances of getting an interview, you'd be better served by rotating there in October since the program will have more interview spots to give out at the end of Oct than at the end of Nov.
