Hi,

I will be doing an Away Derm rotation in Aug. I was just wondering if I should expect the program to give me a courtesy interview when I am there, or if they general wait until the interview season? If they do give it at the place, is it usually more informal?

The place is 5-6 hrs of drive from my place, so it would be nice to not have to drive there during the winter interview season, but then again, I don't have any interview experience right now...

Thanks for your input!

It depends from program to program. Some will offer a courtesy interview while you are there, some will bring you back, and some don't believe in the idea of a courtesy interview at all

(I only did 1 away, they ended up bringing me back because I was only 5 hours away by drive. I rotated with another student and because she had to fly back, they offered her a courtesy interview at the end of the rotation)

Even if they offer the interview at the end of the rotation, I would treat it just as formally as a real interview. I've always favored being invited back to the regular interview anyway. More expensive and more of a hassle but it gives you a chance to see everyone again, perhaps attend a social function, be treated like a regular applicant, and more importantly, stay as fresh as possible in their minds for the ranking process
