Based on my last post, I decided to do an away rotation. Now, the question becomes where, and more importantly, by when. I am currently in a school on the West Coast, and I hope to match to either coast. I spent my entire life, including undergrad, in the East Coast. When should I complete one away rotation by? I currently have one scheduled for late September to October, but that would be too late to get a letter right? Would it be preferable to to an away from late August to September?
It's a little late at this point, so I'm trying to register for aways ASAP. I wanted to do one in NYC, but Sloan Mattel is unfortunately closed ATP.

Also, is there any value in doing away rotations (for your application as a whole, not specific to that site) after October? Thank you all!
Sorry to keep posting 😭 just worried cause this is a last minute change

If you don't have a home program and there's a place you'll like to be at, do one before the deans letter is due, generally before astro as well.

Thank you! What is the significance to doing one before ASTRO? My home program is T10.
Again, and especially if your home program is top 10, an away is not terribly consequential these days for programs beyond the one at which you rotate. Do an away at a program you'd like to attend. If you find you don't like it, great, you saved yourself 4 years. If, as others have said, you have an off putting personality, then don't do an away somewhere you want to match.

Do an away in the region you are interested in. If your home is west coast, you're probably set there. Consider an away at MSKCC or HROP if you think you're amazing and they have space.

If you think you're human, do a smaller, yet still well known department - next 'tier' for east coast (avoiding NC through Florida as you mentioned in a previous post) IMO, would be UPenn, Fox Chase, NYU, JHU,

If you can't get the 2nd tier, then basically any of the other places in NYC, Rutgers, VCU, Maryland, etc.

I did an away at the program I matched to in late August and ERAS was due by the end of my rotation. Was able to get a rec letter in time. I also did an away after ERAS deadline which helped me get an interview at that program. All aways that I did were east coast or west coast at top programs and was satisfied with my interviews/match. Only thing it may have affected for me is my interviews at top programs in Midwest/South, which was not where I wanted to match as much. You can DM if you have any more questions!
