Do people have tips and advice on what I should be doing on away rotations if I really want to go to that institution / get a letter?

I know the obvious things about being enthusiastic, working hard, and being nice but I'm wondering if there was anything else I can do to get in good with the program.

Some people have told me to make an appointment to see the program director to talk to them about your interest. Were there any other pointers people had.

I'm also a little worried about my surgical skills. For some reason, whenever I close trochar sites, I can never get the skin to approximate really well. Anyone have pointers on that? Will my lack of surgical skills kill me or just not set me apart from the middle of the pack.

Thanks guys! Sorry if there is a duplicate post elsewhere.

Not my advice so I cant take credit for it but its general advice for life that I have read and thought I'd pass it along, choose and pick what you think applies for you in your situation.

1. Become the go to guy.

2. Know a field inside and out, you won't do well if you're just another average drone.

3. Cultivate your contacts and make sure the guys that you report too ALWAYS look good in the end even if it means re-doing something to make it right. This is not the same as ass-kissing... this means just do the right thing and take care of the people that hired you. When they move on to bigger and better things they will call, every time.

4. Totally honestly in everything you do.

5. Don't ever get locked into a dead-end because you're scared of change. Change is good and will open new doors.

6. Treat everyone from the top boss to the janitor with the utmost respect.

7. Do not put the boss or anyone in power on a pedestal or ass kiss, you'll get way more respect and they will remember that.

8. Know how to communicate, both written and verbal.

9. Don't ever get comfortable and stop learning. Stay hungry as Steve Jobs said.

10. Know your weaknesses well.

11. Listen, really really listen. Everyone is telling you something in some way that will help you.

12. Do not get into management. Any financial incentives are not worth it if you love your craft. I have friends that tell me they would take it all back if they could.

13. And this is the best advice: find the right woman or don't have one at all. The right one will be your best friend and have your back no matter what and that is a powerful thing. Not having one is far better than having a bad one for so many reasons. I have the right one but I've watched colleagues deal with the wrong one and its not pretty.
Make time for that right woman, if she is the right one she deserves it.

Work your ass off, in a nutshell
