I'm an M3 planning to go into IM and then Cardiology. I will be needing to match into a specific area for residency due to family circumstances so I'm wanting to do a couple of away rotations. It seems I am getting conflicting information from reputable sources as to what courses I need to apply for at other institutions.

Some say I should do an Acting Internship in Medicine just as I will be doing at my home school to audition there. Others say that as long as courses are in the Department of Medicine it does not matter if it is an AI--ICU, Medicine subspecialty electives such as Cardiology, and the like. What is best in terms of getting a good feel for the program, helping myself in terms of getting a residency spot, and adding educational value? Doing multiple AIs would reduce the variety of electives for fourth year, but if that is how it needs to be done I'm listening.
