How important is it to do away rotations in Psychiatry?

Does it help for more competitive programs like those at Harvard or at the UC schools?

It depends on your application and where you want to go. A weak applicant could benefit greatly from away rotations. Even pretty good candidates could benefit from an away if they plan to apply to Harvard Cambridge.

On the other hand, a strong applicant is more likely hurt himself/herself by doing an away rotation at somewhere like UTSA where he/she would likely get interviewed/accepted anyway. Blowing an away rotation off or upsetting current residents will look bad.

If I did an audition rotation during the month of November (in the middle of interviewing season) could it help my chances of getting into a psych residency?

I'm trying to plan my 4th year medical school rotations and I need advice.

Any current psych residents out there? Please add any thoughts you have about audition rotations in general. Did doing them help or hurt you?

Probably not a great idea. Are you planning on doing an audition rotation and taking a bunch of time off to interview, thus potentially killing your chances at that program? Or are you planning on kissing off a pretty key month for interviews?

If November's all you have, go for it, but you'll have to really schedule a lot of interviews back to back in December to compensate, if you're planning on interviewing widely.

TP gave a good synopsis of audition rotations. If you have a dream program and you are willing to knock yourself out going the extra mile and you tend to make good impressions, it's not a bad idea if you're a borderline applicant for a program. But that's a pretty specific combination of conditions.
