So I interviewed at a school recently that had a pretty small interview group, and talked with a phd for my second interview. Everything was great, except that he kept shaking my hand at the end. Perhaps a good sign?

Anyway. It was the last interview of the day, so I decided to hit the john before driving home. Sure enough, as I pulled up to the urinal to do my business there's my interviewer next to me. Fortunately he didn't start talking again, he just finished, shook it clear, and left. He flushed, sure enough, but that was it. No handwashing of any sorts.

I jumped to the obvious conclusion that this was a pattern and he had probably gone before my interview (and several hand-shakings), so I washed my hands thoroughly. But I was wondering, sdn, what if anything I should do? Should I inform the school? Send a note to one of their staff, or students, who monitor student doctor? Let it go? Am I making too much of this? I just think of all places, a medical school interview, it feels wrong to have that happen. I just don't want it to ruin my chances, as I'm pretty sure the guy will know what interviewee tipped them off, having only seen two candidates for the day.

thanks folks.

As I read this, I realize that I got some fat juices from anatomy lab on my forearm today, and I never got a chance to wash it off thoroughly.

You'll notice if you go to your family docs that graduated in the '70s especially, they will do genital exams bare handed. Even bare handed autopsies if you find old school pathologists.

Be sure to contact the school you long as you don't want to go there...

Seriously? I guess you could report him to the handwashing police if his poor hygiene offended you that much. Doesn't he know that you are entitled to live in a world tailored to your desires?

Honestly, whichever course you choose I doubt he will even care or remember it was you in the bathroom.

One of my anatomy professor dissects with no gloves. I mean, he really gets in there and uses his nails to rub the fat away. Like, you can see the solid fat turn to liquid on his hands. Fat is lipophilic (duh) and so that stuff is being absorbed by his hands. Do I avoid touching his hand at all? No. But I make sure to wash my hands after I touch his.

Here's another example. When I see patients, I make sure I was my hands before talking to them to make sure I don't give them any bacteria that could hurt them. When I go to leave, I make sure I was again to make sure they don't give me any bad bacteria that I could introduce to myself, my family or other patients.

Just give up OP. Your hands are dirty no matter what. The best you can do is to wash them before you put them in your mouth. Just don't touch your mouth, nose or eyes in the meantime.

It could be worse. I shadowed an internal med doc who did a couple of rectal exams sans gloves. Just a thick dollop of KY and away he went.

These urine related threads just continue to impress me!

Is your name Mr Monk? The detective?

You need to contact the dean of admissions, the interviewers boss, and probably all of the other schools you applied to so you can warn them that this is not to be tolerated. Yep, that's what you should do.

Seriously?

I've seen a man perform open heart surgery on a pig at a state university with his bare hands while wearing his wedding ring. Pretty legit if you ask me. Wonder what his wife thinks, though.

Not at all the same, but a South Korean post-doc in my lab does everything barehanded. Including handling items just removed from liquid nitrogen and viral transfection protocols. Part of me is pretty sure that's some kind of health risk, but another part of me thinks he's the absolute man

Should report it definitely.
Kidding of course.

My lifetime dentist always comes in the room anr examines inside my mouth without gloves. Kinda weird.

I had a dentist unglove his hand and stick his ungloved finger into my mouth and hold my new fake tooth in place, telling me that the powder on the glove deteriorates the active ingredient in my new fake tooth 😕 .

This was under some pretty good gas.
