I started as a full-time MA for a large academic health care center in May after graduating undergrad, but I really want to quit/transfer. The job is extremely busy with physician schedules consistently double booked and days where I just can't fit in enough time to sit down and eat something of value. I kept at the job for 5 months because I didn't really have any alternatives, but recently my PI was looking to hire lab techs and asked if I wanted to work for her in a part-time position. My application centers around research so my best scenario would be to work part-time for her and part-time in a patient care role, but this would mean quitting or transferring out of my full time role.

Is 5 months too early to request a transfer? Would working for only 5 months in a gap year job be a red flag for admissions committees? I can tell my supervisor doesn't really like people transferring, and I'm just worried that this might cause me headaches. I'm fine with just giving my two weeks, but also don't know if my supervisor would hold a grudge. My worst case scenario is med schools contact my work to verify the hours and then my supervisor speaks bad about me. I'm always exhausted working in the job, and have justifications for wanting to leave, but I don't want to have to explain the whole situation to med schools if I don't need to.

Thoughts?

I wouldn’t overthink this. People change jobs all the time. If you otherwise have plenty of clinical experience then you are free to take the job you’re most excited about

Welcome to the real world.

Find a fallback before you leave your job if you can, but you've worked there beyond the probation period (3 months). You know better about the conditions to leave, but people seek opportunities that resonate better with them.
