I was recently accepted to AZCOM. I really like the osteopathic philosophy, but I am not sure if the osteopathic philosophy is acually applied at AZCOM or other osteopathic schools. In the end I would like to go into pediatric infectious disease. I am really interested in a holistic approach to medicine and learning OMM. Is it idealistic of me to go become a DO based on the philosophy of osteopathy.

Not at all! Where else are you going to get the medical degree you want along with OMM? You won't get it at allopathic schools (well you could get some, a few allo schools are incorporating some classes in OMM... but I can't imagine the training would be as extensive) You get the OMM training at the DO schools, so how is that idealistic to think that you would get it? My doctors work at the family practice clinic at AZCOM and they all incorporate a lot of OMM and osteopathic philosophy into their practice of medicine. I am guessing that is how we will be taught at AZCOM as well.

Attend whichever school you feel will provide you with the training and results you want and which fits you well. OMM, which is much more than manipulation, is most definitely integrated into the curriculum of osteopathic medical schools, more or less, of course, depending on the school. Osteopathic considerations are a component of my medical education. You won't get that same training in allopathic medical schools. If you want the osteopathic angle on things, then attending an osteopathic medical school can provide it for you. What you do afterward, well, that's up to you.

how do you plan applying OMM to infectious disease?

I found the old post I was looking for by a former member here that is appropriate to this conversation:

?? This is the first time I've ever reposted it. It's just so true....and funny.

I've seen it on the site countless times .... and may I ask what type of 'health' student you are? Because if it's not medical ... your opinions are even more worthless than I previously assumed.

I'm a premed, but have worked in health care for several years. You have a PM coming your way.
