Hi everyone,

There is a thread about AZCOM vs MSUCOM, but it was in 2006. Things have changed and I would like to know your opinions about which school is better in term of Clinical rotation and Specialist?

I live in LA, and I know AZCOM has some affiliated hospitals in LA, which are pretty good hospitals. I heard some rumors about AZCOM, but I think the school is trying to fix it, and I saw everyone in AZCOM are very happy. I will fly to MSUCOM to check it out, but if I want to practice in California, would AZCOM give me a better chance?

Thank you for your time.

I would pick AZCOM based off tuition alone, MSU is ridiculously expensive for out of state plus the fact that AZCOM would allow you to rotate in california is nice.

If I will be awarded non-resident scholarship, which brings my tuition down to resident tuition, where should I go?

I'm trying to figure out the California thing as well. Right now, I think it's where I want to end up, but you never know. But from what I've pondered, if you do rotations in California, you have a slightly better shot of getting a residency there, leading to a slightly better shot of a post residency job there.

Now, I have no idea how much that slightly better shot is, and whether a school like MSUCOM and it's slightly better reputation, or at least more established status, would counteract any benefit from doing 3rd year rotations in CA. The point I'm trying to make, is that from a professional level, the benefit from doing rotations in CA would be pretty small, but definitely tangible.

Personally, I think the difference is extremely small, and you should go where you'd feel happiest. Where you end up depends much more on you than the school, yadda yadda.

To add more to that, I believe doing an audition and in general scoring high on the COMLEX/USMLE will give you more significant chances to obtaining the residency you desire. Just like how we apply to med school, we all come from different schools, but mainly our gpa/MCAT is a major deciding factor in getting an interview and acceptance depends on your performance during that interview (they try to decide if you are not psycho, I think).
