I got accepted to both and I had some trouble deciding b/w the two since there isn't much info on Touro-NV and some info is outdated about Azcom. So we took a "research" trip to Phoenix and Las Vegas. Hope this helps someone out.
I am 26yr old male moving with my girlfriend who will be working in the area we move to.
Touro-NV
Pros-
Like 10mins away from Las Vegas strip
Very good match list
Students and faculty were helpful
Biggest med school in NV
Smaller class size
Only one in LV area so rotations sites aren't being fought over with other schools
Cheap housing (serious buyers market)
Seasons (cold winters and HOT summers)
Lower tuition
Diverse population
I am into hiking and camping so with Cali being close access to world class hiking and camping
Cons-
-Like 10mins away from Las Vegas strip
-Not a problem for single guys but if your significant other is looking for a job this will be a problem. Las Vegas jobs are tourist industry based and recession has not been kind. Either way the jobs that are available are low paying jobs related to the tourism industry(low paying). This was one of the biggest turnoffs since our financial situation would be brutal if she can't find a decent paying job.
-The school feels like a High School and looks like one too(could be a pro)
-Seasons( Cold winters and HOT summers)
- High unemployment
- This could just me but driving around Henderson and surrounding area there seemed to a lot homelessness and the vibe was a little downcast(personal opinion)
-No on campus housing
-Wanted two deposits first for $2000 and second for I believe 1000. This might not seem like much but after struggling to pay for all the applications and interviews and related expenses its a decent amount of money.
Azcom
Pros-
-The faculty is helpful, supportive, and quick(I found out I was accepted within a few days). I mean this was consistent more so than anywhere else I went.
- Excellent facilities
-Arizona has been in the news a lot with seemingly racist and redneckishness but when I was there I didn't really feel it much (I am brown)
-Excellent match list
-Faculty didn't seem to have a push towards primary care
-Picked and got my first choice 3rd year rotation site (East valley in Phoenix)
-Access to excellent hospitals in the Phoenix area which serve a large and diverse population
-Oncampus housing- I prefer to live on campus, it helps me with studying
-Large metro area with a lot of corporate headquarters which provide good employment opportunity( suga mama's gotta make that money)
-Buyers market so housing is cheap
-One $1,000 deposit
Cons-
-Its hot as hell 3 months out of the year
-Price 52K this year!
-Big class
-Not much hiking and camping(with trees) to do unless I head up to Northern Arizona
Basically if your a single guy Touro-NV is an excellent school if you don't mind or like the high school of the school building and location. For us I decided on Azcom. I hope this helps someone.
