I got a B- in O chem 1. I still have two more O chem classes to complete along with a bunch of upper division biology classes, biochem classes, and a couple of physics classes. Do you think this B- is detrimental? I'm currently a sophomore with one quarter left to complete. Right now I currently have an overall 3.5 GPA and 3.3 BCPM. Do I still have time to bring it up? Do I have a shot at osteopathic schools with my current GPA?

Hmm, I wonder what your chances are... ::jumps off roof::

orgo is difficult, no one denies that. I think if you keep working hard and get good grades until you apply then you will be fine.

An interesting question is...if people here said that you were screwed what would you do? That grade is over and done with. You can't really do much to change it. If you really want medicine, then those grades that you aren't happy with should make you press on with more determination than before.

The most obvious observation about a premed who struggles in one class and drops premed is that they don't REALLY want medicine. I am not saying a B- is struggling, obviously we all want A's, but just press on if you really want this. Forget about it and move on.

There will always be ways to get into med school at the end. They may take a while and may be expensive, but if you want it, you can get it. It just becomes a question of how BAD do you really want it.

Search around the forum, OP. There are tons and tons of questions like this in the archives.

Do you still have time to bring it up? Physics is a helluva lot harder than figuring out your GPA and what you can bring it up to if you get certain grades in X, Y, Z classes...don't sweat the small stuff. People have gotten in with way worse GPAs.

A grade in any given course is probably not going to make it impossible for you to get into med school - I got B's in orgo, biochem, and physio, and the process treated me just fine. You'll probably want to bring up your overall GPA and BCPM GPA, since that can never hurt, but there are many competitive schools with average GPAs around 3.5.

No, you have no shot. You must never get below a B+ in any class ever, and we're talking pre-school onward. You are allowed 1 grade below an A per calendar year. If you exceed that, your application is rejected out of hand.
🙄

you forgot to mention middle school grades, and a LOR from the doctor....that delivered you

Listen...first thing is that you are considered competitive for medical school right now(in conjunction with a good MCAT), and you have plenty of time to raise your science GPA. If you show relative improvement, then a B- is not a big deal. Just keep at it.

you are not screwed. of course that depends on your mcat score and your ecs too. i got a b- and a c in ochem (and that was after i repeated ochem 1 because i got a d-) and i still got into md programs (even got interviews at places like brown and mount sinai). of course, i did do a lot of other stuff (took time after my undergrad to get a lot of clinical experience) and i got 37 on my mcat... if you want it enough, you can get it. also, i have friends who did masters programs to up their gpas before applying to med school.
