So i just got my organic chemistry 2 grade back, and got a B-, which is a lot worse than i expected. I got an A in orgo 1, and I had a really tough professor that doesnt scale for orgo 2, so a B- resulted. I'm balancing between going to PA school or Med school, and i'm now starting to lean towards PA. If my orgo grades are an A in orgo 1, B- in orgo 2, and an A in lab, how bad will this hurt me. I'm a transfer student, my GPA at my old school was a 3.95 (spent 2 years there) and my GPA at my new school (UMass-Amherst Honors College) is a 3.72, with 2 semesters left. How badly will this B- hurt me, it's the worst grade I've ever received.

This makes my semester grades:
physics 1 (A)
Biology writing (A)
Microbiology (A-)
Organic Chem lab (A)
Organic Chemistry 2 (B-)

Also, for those asking, this grade isn't pushing me to PA school, even before this semester I was leaning towards PA because I don't know if i want that much more schooling.

Please don't conflate your grades with your decision between med school and pa school.

People get B-'s in Orgo 2 all the time and go on to become physicians.

I would imagine you're fine. Do you have any really tough semesters coming up? I hope also that getting the B is not pushing you to PA school, as that is not sound reasoning.

So you have a 3.835 overall
Are you serious OP???
Also you do well next two semesters and you could keep it at that or go slightly higher
Dude you are competitive for M.D and if you kill the MCAT and have great ECs you will get into almost any school.

I appreciate the confidence boost haha, I guess I'm worried because my other school I transferred from was a lot easier, so I'm worried about my grades slightly declining. That and I'm not sure how they calculate overall GPA as a transfer, but thank you!

That's cold.

But should OP even be looking at one of the big four Caribbean schools? That seems like a stretch even.

In all seriousness OP, you're fine. Most of us had a hard ass professor at some point or another and made a B somewhere along the way. I had three B's and did just fine with MD schools. Sounds like it's time to start shifting gears toward the MCAT. Your GPA is unremarkable, which is exactly what you want to be hearing, because it means it's not low.

I had a D one time in O Chem but I killed my science section in MCAT . Just move on

Hi OP,

Got a B- for Physics 2 and O-chem Lab but I still got in somewhere. I freaked out too but I think you'll be fine. Your GPA still looks great (a full 0.2 higher than mines at that point in my college career).

Just keep doing well in your other classes and especially on your MCAT.

Might as well as plan on waiting tables the rest of your life with that grade. I am not sure if PA schools will even accept a B- in o-chem. Never mind the other A's you have in tough science classes. If you can't draw electron arrows correctly then you are screened out of medicine. 🙄

You're fine! Find out what went wrong
