B1 for Neuropathy?

A young physician asked me what dose is adequate for helping her peripheral neuropathy because her doctor told her to get it OTC. I suggested maybe she meant vitamin B6 because, as far I know, B1 is not indicated for PN. She was certain that she was told to get B1. Does anyone here know if B1 has been successfully used to supplement patients who have PN?

I know B1 deficiency can be associated with neurological dysfunction. (ie. wernicke's k encephalopathy - chronic alcoholics tend to have this)

Try looking on PubMed, a cursory search did reveal a few interesting articles. Perhaps a general recommendation for a B-vitamin complex may be best if you just want to cover your basis. Its water-soluble so there shouldn't be any worries in her.

Hi everyone vitamin B1 defeciency has been associated with three disorders Berberi (infantile and adult) and Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome and Leigh's syndrome.Since the patient is adult I would elaborate more on adult beriberi which is described as dry and wet.Dry Berberi is the development of a symmetrical peripheral neuropathy characterized by both sensory and motor impairments,mostly of the distal extremities.Wet beriberi includes a neuropathy as well as signs of cardiac involvement with cardiomegaly,cardiomyopathy, congestive hear failure,peripheral edema and tachycardia.
