Hey,

I've been reading through the forums for the past couple of days, and couldn't quite find a thread that answered my question.

I recently graduated with a BA and immediately began my pharm prereqs (the bulk of the sciences have yet to be completed). I'm considering applying to programs without getting a second degree due to financial constraints; however, I'm wondering if having a BS in either biology or chemistry would help me gain access to a pharmschool. I would be just a semester or two shy, if I put in the hard work in this scenario. Should I just go through with a second degree, or would that be unhelpful/only marginally helpful in the application process?

Any advise/suggestion is appreciated,

AnonAndy 🙂

You don't need the 2nd degree, especially because of what I bolded, underlined, and italicized.

A lot of us, myself included, were accepted to/are currently attending pharmacy school with humanities/social sciences degrees and having a B.S. won't really make any difference, even in highly competitive pharmacy schools like here in CA. All they want to know is that you can handle upper division coursework, regardless of the discipline. If your B.A. is from an accredited institution, IMO, just finish your pre-requisites and apply... Then consider yourself saving some cash money.

If you don't get in this cycle, then you can speak to the schools and see if maybe having a 2nd degree with an "S" instead of an "A" would make a big difference. Chances are, if you're not accepted, it's because of some other deficiency in your application rather than because you hold "Of Arts" instead of "Of Science."
