To a California school
I have beeen told its mandatory. But then again, i've heard likewise.

Also, how many years does a BS call for? about 4 right?

There is no pharmacy school (yet) that requires a 4-year BA/BS prior to matriculation. However, possession of a 4-year degree is highly favorable and makes you more competitive.

hmm, yeah I thought so. Thanks a lot.

yea but.........

if you apply after your bs and you dont get in, you have to do something else for a while

however, if you apply after your 2nd year and dont get in, you can apply during your third year and still work on your bs, and so on........

Just finish it. Use your extra time to get experience and enhance your resume.

Yes, that is very good experience. You'll be surprised at how many people are accepted to pharmacy school without having any pharmacy experience.

hmm, alright then....

well getting experience is not the easiest thing

every time i've called a pharmacy they ask 'are u a pharmacy student' , 'no i'm looking to get experience before applying to a school', 'oh, we only hire students, we dont take volunteers'

well after a lot of tries i found on guy who is gonna give me a chance to volunteer starting in sept so i'm 😀

but, when you finish pharmacy dont you get a bachelors of science, why would u need two anyway?

Well, you'd need one to get into many of the west coast pharmacy schools. Its not required, but HIGHLY recommended.

Pharmacy school gives you a PharmD (in most, if not all schools now). This is higher than a Bachelor's degree. Until 1995, schools of pharmacy only offered Bachelor's degree. So to answer your question, you can get a Bachelor's degree prior to pharmacy school and get a PharmD in pharmacy school---or---you could get in with only an Associate's (2 year degree) and still get a PharmD as well. Hope this makes sense 😉

I know for the University of Mississippi's pharmacy program after the 2 years of prereq's and first 2 of pharmacy school they grant you a BS in pharmaceutical sciences. Then after the last two years u receive your pharm.d. SO if you had a bs in chem before that you can end up with 2 bs's.

but you know

more BS=MORE fun 🙂

/edited to clarify

Does the area of your BS degree make a huge difference? I have BS degrees in Economics and History. I know it won't help a ton, but will it hurt my chances very much that they aren't in more related areas?

I'm not in pharmacy school, so I speak with very limited credibility.

But one of the schools I plan to apply says a BS or higher is highly favorable. Now I'm sure they'd prefer it if were a math or science degree, but as long as you have the pre-req's it shouldn't matter so much. And remember you still have an edge over a lot of those applicants without a degree.

If you have a B.S. in something like Biochemistry... do you still have to go to school for 6 years to get a PharmD? Or is it like a shortened program for those with a B.S.?

I thought the BS in Pharmacy was already phased out..

n/m. Mis-read your post. Bachelors in Pharmaceutical Sciences. 👍

it really depends on the school. some schools, like ucsf, stress diversity and may actually appreciate students that majored in non-science subjects.

That's good to know.

Btw, off-topic - I like your username - S4's are the funnest cars in the world 🙂

ok, now i have a question regarding a BA in chemistry vs a BS in chemistry. my school offers both, but i'd like to get into pharmacy school sooner than later. does it matter if i get the BA in chemistry instead of the BS?

If your grades are high -- particularly in your science pre reqs -- it shouldn't matter.

It shouldn't. A degree in the sciences is a degree in the sciences. With a BA, though, they'd probably expect your grades to be a bit higher or something like that (although I know plenty of undergraduate BA chemistry majors, and it's no walk in the park). So it all just really depends on how patient you are. I'm finishing my BS in biology this year; I will have graduated in three years. If I weren't doing pharmacy school, I would have either done a BS in geochemistry or BS in biochemistry.

If you are admitted in a 6-year program like at UOP or USC, does it mean that you are automatically already admitted to their Pharm-D program or not? 😕

If its a true 6 year program...
then i believe if you meet the set requirements they put forth (certain grades etc) then yes

If you maintain a certain GPA, you make it to your P1 year.... Ive found that 6 year programs dont have a very good attrition rate in the first two years... they try to weed everyone out...
