Hi, this is my first post other than my newbie one. You all seem like a great group to be apart of, and I’m happy to have found this community. My understanding, after meeting with the Assistant Director at the UIC School of Pharmacy, is that receiving a Bachelor of Science is not a must. I was told that usually when someone is not accepted they will then get their Bachelor of Science to better help them for the next time around. I am very nervous that I will be one stuck in this situation, especially considering the UIC’s acceptance rate is about 12%. I still have a ways to go in my pre-pharmacy curriculum, but I like to get all of my worrying out of the way.

So, here’s my question. In the case that someone never gets accepted, what sorts of careers and pay can someone expect that has a Bachelor of Science? More opportunities in bio or chem? How common is it for someone to never get accepted? I await any information that you think would be helpful.

Also, I plan on becoming a pharmacy technician around the start of next year. I have a $40 application for Pharmacy Technician Licensure. Is this necessary to submit? My understanding is that most places hardly require anything. Any positive or negative comments about different companies would be helpful.

Thank you - Scott

In addition to looking at UIC's (no idea which school this is) acceptance rate. Look at the number of students who have a BA/BS. Usually this is reported. You can assume if there are 12/100 accepted, and class size is 144 that they took 1200 applications to get 144 students, if 85% of those have BA/BS that means that of 1200 applicants <20 got in that didnt have a BA/BS versus 124 that had BA/BS. In other words BS, while obviously not mandatory, is worth pursuing. You probably won't get in first try without it unless you stick out for some reason (someone on here has parents who own a pharmacy and both are PharmD's).

Too many jobs to mention that you can do with a BA/BS in Bio/Chem/Biochem. If drugs interest you, drug research  does not require PharmD or Dr Pharmacology. Synthesis of drugs, finding drug candidates, all the background stuff is done by biochemists/chemists/bioinformaticists (is that a word?) And salary ranges from mid-60's to six-figures+ (plus stock options in most of the smaller drug development firms)
Besides all that you can do industrial chemistry, environmental biology, and who knows what else.
Most colleges have a career development center. Talk to them.

I was wondering the same thing. Thank you for clearing that up for me as well.
