Hey guys! So I am an undergrad student who is studying art and premed classes at the same time. It will take a year longer to do both and I can’t decide which one to get. The biology bachelors has an extra year of biology classes that are not premed (like animal behavior, etc..) and I will be one year away from a BFA in design. I could just get a minor in design and finish taking biology classes (that are not related to med school) or I could graduate with a design bachelors and complete premed perquisites at the same time. Do you think that I would stand out more with a bachelors in design or a bachelors in biology with a minor in design? There are no health science bachelors or other bio bachelors. I’m worried my GPA may not be so great in the freshman science perquisites (2 B’s in chemistry and biology since my school only did A’s & B’s). The rest of my grades are A’s but i’m scared i’ll get more B’s in other science classes. I so badly just want to help people and be a doctor but what if i’m not smart enough. I just love it so much but my GPA is not perfect. Overall my GPA is a 3.89 in everything (67 units). Would I have a greater chance if I studied biology and got a B average or a B average in science while studying art with an A average? Or do I have no chance at all and should just give up (my heart is broken and I can’t depart from medicine). Thank you so much to anyone who wants to answer and help me out! What special people on here 🙂

Do whatever your heart desires so long as you earn good grades. It is entirely up to you and makes no difference to medical schools.

Best of luck to you.

BFA would be way more interesting. Most of the people in my class are science majors. But as long as you do well in your major and complete pre-reqs with a good gpa no one will care.

I think the BFA will make you stand out in a positive and unique way. When 13,000 other people are applying to the same school, over 50% of them with a science degree, you’ll want to differentiate yourself from the others in a good way. But of course getting a good GPA should always come first and foremost.

I’m going to argue for the BFA - the only caveat is if you have any question about going to med school, you may have a difficult time finding a job (same with Bio, so that’s not necessarily a better option). But BFA is unique, so if you are passionate about it, go for it.

Don't do a degree because of it's perceived uniqueness and ability to help you. I say this as someone with a BA in Music who had a ten year career before med school. Do it because it's what you love and because you're allowed to have passions outside of medicine/science. Also, as someone with a spouse who has a BFA in design I've never seen any issues with finding a job. If you're good at what you do you'll find a gig.

What it comes down to is at the end of the day, if you don't get into med school, what do you see yourself doing? In fact, this question was asked both on secondaries and interviews.

I was assuming OP likes art and would be happy with an art degree. It has the added bonus that it looks good to med schools, not sure what the disconnect is here.

As a non-traditional/non-science major, I got a very positive response from adcoms who seemed very impressed with my choice of major.

Thank you so much, everybody for helping me out!! Such great advice & what amazing people you guys are 🙂)

Question: What do you guys think about an interdisciplinary major, where I would basically have a minor in biology & a minor in graphic design? It is a bachelors degree that I basically could make myself.

I could make my own bachelor's, take classes in two concentrations, and try to get approval from the two departments I wish to study in. I feel like it is basically two minors though, but could be a very cool bachelors degree. I was thinking about making it a medical illustration degree. I was wondering if you guys have ever seen a student with an interdisciplinary major in medical school.

Would a BFA in design be better than a BA in interdisciplinary studies? I would then show the school which classes I took on the transcript and I suppose it will say the two areas that I was concentrating on (biology & art). Which degree is more likely to get me into medical school?

What do you guys think? I value my fellow SDN members recommendations on here.

Thanks again everybody!! Much appreciated 🙂
