Back/posture problems as a dentist
Started by schen140
ive heard that many dentists end up with back problems, with all the hours spent hunching over
does anyone know if there is an effective way to counter this, or if it's just an inevitable problem that u'll have to hope to get lucky and avoid?
Ever wonder why dentists have those special chairs that contort the patient to all those different heights and angles? Yup, so that they can avoid back stress.

Avoid? more like reduce 😛
I know I'll be heading to the chiropractor every week...

I've had back problems since I was about 24 years old (im 28 now). When I was younger in my high school days I was a "gym" freak.... Did alot of weight training, I guess pushing my limits with free weight squats did its tole on my lower back (free-weight squating around 405 lbs at age 19-20 wasn't the smartest thing I did)
Anyways, back pain was always a problem for me, I mean, bending down, bending backwards, bending down to pick up my book back was a painfull situation for me. From age 24 till I was about 27, my life was pretty painful..... UNTIL i went to a physical therapist doctor (MD), He told me what the problem was, he showed me some back exercieses that I should do everyday when I first wake up for about 10 minutes.... I've been doing them for about a year now.... zero back pain, I can bend down, backwards, I can lift stuff again, no issues.
I believe keeping your back muscles flexible (which is what these excercies do) helps your back tremendously... I used to believe physical therapy is "quack" medicine.... not any more

Use loupes and pay attention when they teach you about proper posture and positioning the first week of sim clinic.
