it seems like there is like a war of back tests in every d-school.
There is just so much stuff to study that everyone would just do anything to have a little edge.
i just started dschool this year and i have been bombarded by how crucial is to take a peak to those old exams. It is a little frustrating because i dont feel like kissing axx to 2nd year students or pay a grip of cash to get it, but at the same time i want to have an edge just like everyone else.
i guess i am just writing this thread from the stress that i got from reading 9hours straight on a Saturday. Peace

I assume you are not LDS....ever consider converting? Those guys always had the best test files at my school.

Seriously though, shell out the money, you can always sell it to another sucker next year....the cycle will continue, so don't sweat it...you'll get your money back!

Don't attempt to take an exam without looking at old exams!!!! Trust me, it's just the way it's done.

At UPenn, the second years sell a 4-inch thick "packet" of tests going back about 10 years depending on the class. I don't know what I would do without it.

At Columbia, about 90% of old tests are posted on class websites. Everyone basically has the same chance of doing well.

at UNC we get test files from a "big brother/sister" upperclassman each year. Other places make you pay other students for them? Even the schools charging you 200g for a degree? Man tough world out there.

Yes. We are charged for the packets, but test packets are not "sponsored" by the school so some one has to pay for those ~4,000 pages of old tests. The cost is meant to help raise money for each class.

That's how IUSD is. Pro-novice 4 life. 😛

Here the old anatomy tests are online, but we also use a big-brother system. Although it is somewhat of crap-shoot, as some people's bigs are MUCH more helpful than others.

Aphistis, I havent been on for a while and it seems someone has finally thrown you a bone. It looks like your life's work is complete, you are now a moderator 👍 (j/k). Seriously, we need a good dental watchdog on SDN such as yourself keeping things in-line.

Can anyone tell me how students at Buffalo get hold of past exams? Thanks!!

Can any Baylor or UT San Antonio dental students comment on how you get a hold of old exams at your schools?

We just do the big brother/sister thing here - an 2nd year comes, dumps all his old stuff (which included all the previous old stuff as well - it accumulates) using a memory stick, and then we pass it around the class. No cost involved and it's easy to keep stuff organised 👍 All you really need is one person per class with a scanner at home...

We have that too at Penn and that can be a tremendous resource, but the old tests are really invaluable.

It is the old tests, mostly, plus some other random things like helpful slides and some old scribes.

I'm sorry....I'm probably an idiot, but where are you at school?

UMDNJ 👍

At BU, we paid 20 dollars for 2 cd's. One cd has all the old exams for every class. The other cd has transcribed notes for most classes.

Can anyone speak for how Arizona works? Very good thread. I had no idea that things worked this way in D-school. I guess I never really thought about it. Does fauclty foster this type of community property attitude? Thanks 👍

So no one still from Buffalo?

$40 for a DVD of stuff. =)

And then we sold it to the incoming 1st years for $40 again.

At Buffalo you are paired with a big Bro/Sis who supplies you with everything you need. It is a great program and it has worked out very nicely for me. Good luck in your decision.

Great! Thanks for all your responses. I hadn't even thought of this resource, but I always appreciated when I could look at past exams in undergrad 🙂

Yeah you get a big bro/big sis here at Buffalo, but like that other guy said, it's a crapshoot because some people have good stuff and some people don't. It's very frustrating when you spend weeks studying for something, get to the test and do your honest best, walk out and hear half the class talking about what an easy test that was because they had an old test from a specific year in which 90% of the current year's questions came from.

It was a huge disappointment when some of us learned that dental school tests who you know, not what you know. Some things you have to learn the hard way I guess.
