Hey guys just a quick question about background checks. What exactly does it show? Does it show any charges when you were a minor. I got charged with something stupid during my high school years when i was still under 18. However i got off just doing some community hours and a ticket. but i am wondering if it will affect my acceptance at MSU? any input is much appreciated.

oo btw ever since i have not gotten into trouble with law...

If you told MSU about it in your app then you should be fine. I don't think it should show any charges from when you were a minor though

+1. I know of someone who had multiple juvie charges and run-ins with the law, but was admitted. As far as I know the person was up-front from the beginning about their past history.

Just don't let the school be the first one to know about it.

Applications ask about felonies and misdemeanors, not charges. Therefore, they could not reject you solely on charges that didn't result in conviction (i.e. dismissed).

yes i was under the impression that they wanted to know about those charges for which u have been convicted for or have not received pardon yet... so i did not feel any need to declare that. i wasnt really trying to hide anything just a mistake in interpretation. but i wonder what they would think if they found out through background check, although i doubt it will show up since i was a minor at the time. so far all the criminal checks i have gotten done for job/volunteer placements have been clean, so i am guessing it should be the same thing :S ?

Wrong.
Some secondaries specifically say to include charges. They can see it anyway, on a b/g check.
Don't set the guy up for failure.
I have seen NOVA ask about expunged records, but I haven't seen a secondary that asks for charges. If a secondary does say to list charges, he should list charges; the same logic with NOVA if he has an expunged record. If I was someone with dismissed charges and an application didn't ask for charges and only felonies and misdemeanors, I would not list them. Either way, he should contact a lawyer if he wants to be sure. I'm not telling him what to do. I'm telling him what I would do.

I may be wrong but I have heard that you can get a background check on yourself just to see what shows up and what doesn't. I don't know the name of any specific services that do this but maybe someone else on here can suggest something. You can ask a lawyer as well and he may be able to help you see what exactly is on your background check. Probably the best way to know.

This is pretty solid advice.

This is true of Certiphi, but does DO also use this?

hmm i will check with a lawyer regarding what shows up in background check and what doesnt. and i was also under the impression that any charges as a minor are only maintained for a limited period or time but i could be wrong. btw i am a Canadian and i got accepted to MSU and dont want any misinterpretation on my part to screw things up.

I love seeing titles like this because my first thought is like... OOHHHHHH someone's going to share intimate details of the stupid things they did in their past! Yessss!!!!

And after quickly skimming the thread... no dirty details.

NOVA asks specifically about expunged charges? What's the point of an expungement then?

My record has been expunged/sealed and my police check shows nothing, even vulnerable sectors show nothing. Now i am strongly torn between letting MSU knwo and raise a red flag or just let it be because i dont think there is any public access to expunged records.

Expungement is actually a tricky thing because in some states you still have to disclose your charges/convictions/etc. for state licensing, so I imagine that would be the logic.

yeap, thats wat i ended up doing, just took the responsibility and explained them the circumstances. They told me that they will add that to my file. Thanks for your input guys
