Has anyone paid for a background check on themselves before applying to residency? I live in a state where certain traffic violations count as misdemeanors and just want to double check.

If so, what companies did you use/have experience with this?

Haven't done it myself but my residency used Certiphi on me so I assume that would be a good one to use on yourself if you have no other ideas.

And how would this necessarily change anything? If something does pop up on the background check you did on yourself you're going to declare it. And if something doesn't pop up you won't? The best advice I got when I went through my medical licensing a few years ago was to just declare everything, even minor traffic violations cause it's better to declare something stupid than to not do it and ultimately it showing up making you look like a liar. So just put everything down. Everyone's gotten some traffic tickets, it's no big deal. Well, unless it's a DUI/DWI then you may be DOA in certain states.

Do you have insight into what channels they use for the checks at the licensing level, and if so is it more intense? As in, if a student has past incidents that were removed from the record in HS/college and thus all background checks (Certiphi) have come back clean thus far, would these now suddenly be found when they run the check for licensing?

Asking for a friend of course...

No unfortunately I don't know what they use for licensing approvals. I was told by the guy from the licensing department that it does a deeper dive and can find things that a normal background can't see hence the need to just declare everything. Now I don't know if this was just a scare tactic to make sure everyone just declares everything or if they actually use a federal law enforcement agency level background check to do it. I'm also in California and they're notorious for being super anal about these things.

State licensing boards are government entities so they get background checks from their respective state law enforcement agencies. All arrests at the local level are ultimately filed with the state. Therefore, if you want a background check that is reflective of what the board will see, you can submit fingerprints to your state law enforcement agency. Most will allow citizens to review their records in order to check for errors.

As long as you answer the questions on the application truthfully you have no reason to worry. Some will ask you to only list/explain “convictions” so if you were arrested and never convicted then don’t list it. It will make you look like an idiot who cant follow instructions. If they ask you to explain all arrests regardless of whether or not you were convicted you should do that.
