UNC sent an info sheet where you registered for a background check on a commercial website. It didn't take much except for revealing all the places you've lived in the last three years. All it looks at is if your name pops up in any criminal records.. I don't think they look at minor traffic violations though.
More like, you can bet all schools do this. A university puts itself in immense legal liability when they hire new employees and admit new students. Can you imagine the lawsuits that'll appear if a university unknowingly (but should have not, via background check) admit a person with history of rape and an employee there gets raped? That's millions of dollars down the drain. You can bet that university's lawyers won't be so sloppy as to not force the univ to not do a background check.
Once they do a background check (and they will do one) and something comes up, a committee gets together to decide what to do. If they decide it's not major, they let it go. Otherwise, they'll decide to let the student/employee go. If a certain student has something on his record and is enrolled in the school, what's happened is that the school decided it's okay for him to be enrolled, not that they didn't do a background check and doesn't know. They absolutely know.
Thats marvelous. Most schools still do not do background checks. There are only a few that actually do require the student to actually submit to a third party background check. Legally, universities are NOT required to do background checks - so the University cannot be held liable for the student's action. The student would be charged by the state, but legally - what you are saying is absolutely groundless.
Legally, the school would have to notify you if they were going to do a background check, or at least have your consent to do so. (This is why you are required to fill out a form for the few schools that do this).
So, no - most schools do not do background checks.
And you're familiar with the policies of most universities, Mr Lawyer? I never filled out a background check form. Then when I checked the university policy on background checks, it's on there. Dental students and professionals were explicitly listed on there.
Of course universities are not required by law to do background checks. They just would expose themselves to massive liability if they didn't. If you think universities with full legal teams are dumb enough to put themselves thru such immense liability, then go ahead.... And I don't think you even know what you're talking about. You use words that involve legal terms, but you have yet to demonstrate that you know what they mean. Because this is not an issue of a University being responsible for its students' actions. This is about a University being liable TO a student/employee for the dangers it carelessly put towards ANOTHER student/employee.
And univ's can have a separate form for background checks, or combine it with some other form you may not have noticed. But to be honest, I'm not even sure they need your permission to do a background check. I'd have to check on this, but criminal records should be public record.
And the state charges on criminal cases. So if a student were to commit a criminal act, the state would be the prosecutor. In TORT cases, however the VICTIM or his agent/estate brings the case forward. In these cases, the university lawyers would have to defend the cases directly. The state doesn't get involved. The case of John Doe v. University would probably be sued in tort.

The thing is, in order to become a licensed dentist you need to go through a background check to begin with. So, even if a particular school does NOT perform background check, it will still come back and haunt you later.

I think a thief would have better luck than someone convicted of selling drugs or possession of a significant quantity of drugs. Unless ofcourse your theft was armed robbery or something.Unless you are a murder or a thief, I don't think you will have any problems getting into dental school or becoming a dentist....
Buffalo required that you verify any problems that you've mentioned in the application and assure them that there is nothing else going on. If you had problems of academic nature they require that the registrar mail them a letter stating what was mentioned in your application.
you ought to worry if you have a felony. misdemeanors pose no problem

Temple issued one the other day. We have to pay 20 bucks for a child rapist background check and a criminal check. Since we are in our second year I hope everyone passes!

Hm. Yea...unless you have a felony or drug-related problems you'll be fine. And it's not only that schools don't want "shady" (using this veery loosly, no one's perfect yo) people, but there's also the issue of obtaining a DEA license in the future. So, it's more of a issue of not training a dentist that won't be able to practice.
