Should I be calling my old bosses and volunteer work spots and give them a head's up that someone may be doing a check on me (so that they don't think it's weird) or do the programs mainly stick with criminal background check and not go that deep?

They already got 3 or 4 personal refs about you in the form of your LORs and MSPE. Any more would be a waste of their time. Besides, they already have a contract with you. It can't be voided just because your college biochemistry professor or landlord thinks you're a douchewad.
This background check is strictly of the criminal background variety. That they can break the contract for failing.
