Backup plan?

If you end up not getting in to Pharmacy school, what will your backup plan be? Will you continue in the pre-pharm until you are good enough to get in, or will you switch majors?

I'm having a hard time coming up with my backup plan. This is my first time applying to Pharm school, and I'm worried I'm not going to get in. I have applied to the Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Sciences program at Drake University. Has anyone heard anything about that? I haven't decided if I'll go there, or continue with pre-pharm if I don't get into a Pharm D program.

In the mean time, find a job that will make you a more competitive applicant such as lab tech or even a pharmacy tech.

I'm graduating this May so I'd probably get a job that makes me a more competitive applicant and reapply as soon as I can again. I really want to get my PharmD and be a clinical pharmacist so it'll take more than one round of rejection to get me to quit.

Well, seeing as this is my second time applying, I am going to try to apply to a few special masters programs for the fall of this year, and if I don't get accepted to those programs, then I will apply to a masters program next year (for fall 2008), and then hopefully re-apply in 2 years. 😳

mm, medicine 🙂 My friends don't believe me though; I'd rather be a pharmacist rather than doctor, though I wouldn't mind being a doctor. It's just that feeling I guess.

Pardon my views but if you cant make it to Pharmacy school chances are you are not going to make it to med school either. On the contracy, if you make it to med school, getting into pharmacy school is like a walk in the park.

Again, it depends upon which pharm school or which med school. UCSD only accepts 75 people out of over 1000 applicants. That IS like applying to med school in itself.

If you are talking about getting into school in general I see your point.

But keep in mind there are DO schools and lower-tiered MD schools out there that are easier to get in then some of the better - best pharmacy schools.

But pharmacy and medicine are two entirely different areas. It is like comparing apples to oranges. They do not have many similarities.

Well, I know (knew?) that I was going to make it into a medical school or a pharmacy school, it was only a matter of choosing which path I wanted to pursue.

This year, I applied to 1 pharm school and didn't get accepted. Next year, I plan on applying to a few more pharmacy schools. I will also be applying to a few schools with MPH programs. If I don't get into pharmacy school again, chances are I'll be admitted to an MPH program. So I'll probably work on my master's degree (1-2 years, depending on the school) and then I'll see where I'm at in my life. I may pursue a career in health administration, or I may apply to pharmacy school one more time just for the heck of it. I have a strong interest in both fields.

I doubt I would keep applying to pharmacy school after two more deferred years.

The only medical school that parallels a pharmacy program, as far as getting in, would be carribean med schools (who would want to attend those anyways). There is no way it is more difficult to get into pharmacy school than any US medical school, period. 75 out of 1000 applicants????? There havent been that few applicants to med schools (other than a few in state schools that only accept instate students) for years. Try only accepting 150 out of 10,000 at George Washington, or the base average of about 4-6 thousand applicants per medical school for a class smaller than 150.

Bottom line: if you cant hack it applying to pharmacy school, you will not get into medical school.

I'll go to GA state and get a bachelor's degree in Neurobiology and Behavior. If at that point, I want to pursue that field farther, I can do that, or I'd still consider applying to pharmacy school.

Mine was to go to film school. I'm still thinking of moving to Austin after I gaduate and going to UTexas part time.....
