Hi,
I was curious whether you can apply for both Optho residencies and an alternate residency at the same time as a backup?

For example, could someone apply for Optho residencies and then also apply for a peds residency since they use separate match programs.

The reason I ask is that I am definitely interested in optho, but could easily also see myself as a pediatrician if I don't match in optho.

Thanks!

Yes, that is possible. It takes a little extra time to get both applications filled out + recs, extra money, etc, but it is doable. Also, you will need to prepare for more interviews also.

you can do it.... No matter what you'll be applying for both matches as prelim/transitional year is through eras. Watch out for interviewing at peds and optho programs in the same hospital though. If the program directors find out about it, they may question your level of commitment to either program and rank you lower.
