I will finish my degree in International Relations and I want to pursue a post bac pre med to be a dentist. The thing is that Im really bad at math and I took Algebra 1 three times and failed it two W's and one F. It resulted that wasn't even a required course for the major and many dental schools only required statistics where I had an A. Also, my average gpa is 3.75 I've been always an A student except when it comes to math 🙁

Can I still look good for dental schools? Do you recommend me again to retook the algebra or not? Pleasee help! Im desperate!

some schools require a semester of calc but i'm not too sure actually..but you might wanna retake algebra and get an A

You should be ok, but there is a math section on the DAT and if you bomb that it could keep you from dental school.

Your cGPA might be 3.75 according to your school but you can be guaranteed AADSAS will calculate it lower. EVERY grade counts, including W's and F's.

Luckily for you, it's not all that hard to count to 32 🙂

W's don't affect GPA at all. The F certainly will though..

I have some great apps on my iPad that help me. Also tutoring and youtube! GL

I understand if some predents choose not to take Calculus but anyone who is pursuing a health profession should be able to do well in Algebra. Although the repeat failure in Algebra is definitely an issue in terms of GPA, it is also a competency issue. Evidence-based dentistry is a term that has been thrown around lately among dental schools & dental education journals. If you can't grasp Algebra, I don't know how you'll be able to interpret statistics in peer-reviewed studies and keep up with an advancing profession. At the minimum, you should be man or woman of science in order to prevent our profession from falling into the slippery slope of a vocational or technical field. At best, you should contribute to scholarship through research. You will be required to know at least up to Geometry/Algebra 2 for the QR section of the DAT.

You are both 1/2 right. I was told that W's don't count, unless they're WF's (then they count as F's).

But what should i do? I'm doomed? Should I repeat again? How dental school will see my transcripts? I have most straight A's is only that F that doesn't help.

The part that you should be worried with repeated algebra 1 three times are:

-As someone mentioned above, QR will be part of DAT. If you fail QR section, it will bring your AA down. AA is important section in DAT for adcoms to consider an applicant.

-Many bio/chem/physics classes will have math beyond algebra1. Even biochem has a bit of math. It could definitely hinder your grades. Before you take algebra 1 again, master it through khans academy. Technically, you could get in by acing all the science courses. But as I stated above, it can affect you getting into dental school.
