Hi guys,

May I have some input on my gpa trend?

I'm currently a Senior weighing in on whether I should apply after graduating or work on a post bacc.

I had near 4.0 semesters freshman and sophomore years. However, fall of my junior year, I was extremely sick during finals and did really bad: ~3.00 in my sciences and ~3.66 nonscience. However, my gpa picked up my junior spring and I had ~3.7-3.8 that semester. I'm doing alright this semester as well and I'm expecting at least a ~3.5

I was wondering how much this valley in my gpa would hurt me. Would it be viewed as a downward trend. I'm really scared because I'm getting worse grades in my upper division sciences than I had during my lower division prerequisites (I'm not a transfer student or anything).

I think they understand if you have one bad semester. And it's still a 3.0 which really isn't that bad considering you have consistently had much higher grades all the other semesters. I definitely don't think you'll NEED a post-bac, but try to keep up your grades in your upper div coursework and do well on your DAT. have you taken it yet?

Thank you for your reply corpus luteum.

I'm planning on taking the DAT sometime this spring. I've begun to acquire study materials and I'll be studying for it this winter.

Has anyone faced the same situation before?

Honestly, I don't think you have much to worry about. As long as you can keep your GPA high and do well on your DAT, you should be well on your way to getting into a d-school. Apply early, get your letters on time, and be on honest to the interviewers about your sickness as you've done with us. 👍

I think your dip is fine, its worse for people who have under 3.0 dip. Apply and good luck!

Hey!

I have a very similar dip in my academic record as well, and I have five interviews so far so i really do not believe most dental schools will hold it against you. I had a dip in sophmore year spring and Junior year fall with GPAS at 3.2/ 3.4 for those semesters when for the other semesters prior I had gpas of 3.8-4.0. Nonetheless my junior year spring i finished strong (semester before I applied) with a solid 3.79. I think if you finish strong in your last few semesters (really try hard!!!) and get a good DAT it won't matter...just make sure it doesn't continuously decrease and you go below that 3.0sgpa you got before.

I ended up having a cum 3.7 GPA and 3.6 sgpa so It is not spectacular but I did end up being competitive enough so you should try and aim for the highest you can so your cum GPA can at least stay at 3.5 or slightly increase. Good luck to you!

Thanks for the replies guys!

Has anyone else been through the application with a similar situation? Somethinpositiv could you please chime in?
