Hi guys,
I am a nursing student whose GPA is going down as I am getting closer to graduation. My pre-med classes are all As, but because of nursing classes, Bs, B-, overall GPA is going down. Does it matter when I am applying to Medical school? do they take into consideration the fact that nursing classes are different from other classes. It's just I can't get As in nursing at all.

any advice? any opinions? or should this thread be trasnfered to somewhere else?

I was a nurse before going to medical school. Don't worry about your grades too much in nursing school. They will bring down your GPA (bad) but won't count towards your science GPA (good). I blew off nursing school while I was there because I couldn't stand it. It just wasn't for me. Anyway, I graduated with something like a 3.1 or just under that. I went back, took all science prerecs and a couple extra high level science classes to boost the GPA, made all A's in everything and ended up with a GPA of around 3.3. That GPA with an above average MCAT got me lots of interviews and an acceptance to the school of my choice. Of course, this was the harder route. A friend of mine had mostly A's while in nursing school so he didn't have to take any extra courses other than the prerecs and he did alot less sweating when it came to the application process. The higher you can get your GPA the better.

From this point on try your best to get all A's, even in nursing school. Nursing school is a joke compared to the premed classes. I know that most of the nursing cirriculum is complete BS and it makes you want to vomit to just look at that material but suck it up and do the best you can. Just use getting accepted to medical school as your inspiration. I loved every last minute of medical school and am finishing my last 2 week of internshiop. I've been working my butt off this year but it's been GREAT!!! The best thing about nursing is that it will give you some prospective when you are a physician. No matter how bad a day gets I never bitch about work because I know exactly how good I have it now.

I am also a nurse. I finished with my BSN with around a 3.12 in october 06. I wish this was the only transcript that I need to give but I have another bachelor's degree and my grades are horrible. I was a single mom raising my son and did not have time to study and then I also transferred from one college to another. So I have 3 or so transcripts. I don't even know off hand really. Anyway, combined I am at a 2.7gpa. I have to do all my pre reqs over again because they are all 14 yrs old (that is how old my son is now 🙂 and I have set my mind to get all A's in the pre req classes. I have to I have no room to fail now and there is no reason to fail. I am also going to take some easy classes to get A's in those to bring up my gpa. I want to take the MCAT some time next year, but I brought the book and I am studying and reviewing now. It is going to take alot of work but we all can do it. So even if you are in your nursing program now, just strive to get A's in them. I know how those nursing classes are, they are a pain but it is what we have to do. Strive to do well and you will be fine. 🙂

Congratulations on your finishing up the internship. What you described is what exactly I am going through. But I felt the other way, pre-med is a joke comparing to Nursing classes. I hate studying in Nursing, it's just I have to do it for other reasons. Long explanation. In the end of each semester I think of dropping the nursing and someone stops me all the time. I just have to hang on one more year.
I am getting my A.S in Nursing, but I will go to obtain B.S to 4 year college and I will do good in 4 year college, because I will be majoring in Bio. So do you think they will ignore my Bs from Nursing classes? Thank you

I am striving. I thought I can do everything in world, but not getting As in my school from nursing classes. I'd rather take some high level Physics or Bio, than fundamentals of Nursing (hated it so much). Being a single Mom and studying in nursing should have been very stressfull. After Nursing, taking pre-med calsses willl be much easy to you, because those classes make sense. Good luck in the whole process. I'll try to get As, two more semesters left for me.
